Water Pollution in Malaysia

by | 06-05-2017 10:06 recommendations 0

Water Pollution has been a big fuss over the world for years. Why are we so concerned about water pollution?

So first of all, lets take a step back and look at the importance of clean water:
- Health: Diseases from dirty water kill more people people every year than forms of violence, including war 1
- Time:  In Africa alone, women are spending 40 billions hours a year just to walk water 2
- Women Empowerment: Women are responsible for 72% of water collected in Sub-Saharan Africa 3

Now we know how clean water is able to bring such impact on us. However, clean water are wasted through water pollution.

Garbage trapped by the log boom in Sungai Pinang in Jalan Sungai, Penang. A government spokesman said many take the easy way out by dumping everything into rivers, even though they know very well that this will pollute the waterways. Contract workers

The issue of water pollution in Malaysia is loads of rubbish clogging up Malaysian rivers. Two thousand, two hundred tonnes of rubbish - equivalent to the combined weight of more than 300 adult African elephants - is dumped into rivers, drains and waterways of Malaysia every month 4. This causes a large sum of money are required to recover the river. These rubbish chocked the aqua lives and destroyed the beautiful scenery of nature.

One of the main problem faced by my country is the lack of awareness among the citizens.

Please do reply on how can we solve this issue. Together we can make the Earth Greener =)

Hi Cheng- I think awareness is the main solution to educate the masses about the harmful effects of littering and polluting our water bodies.

Thank you for the report. Seeing the report, I was so surprised to find same situation of in my country.
In Madagascar, the principle materials which polluted the water are the packaging, plastics bottles, the cans. Sometimes, those blocked the drainage channels and caused the flood, especially in the town. I think the sensitization of people about throwing the garbage in the rubbish bins is also a solution of these situation. and there should be one specific entity to clean up the water.

In Nigeria, it's a serious problem too, especially in the coastal regions of niger delta area. Water pollution goes beyond marine or surface water pollution, groundwater ecosystems are also polluted through indiscriminate disposal of vehicular waste oil, hazardous waste discharges from industries- base metals, iron and steel, tanneries, poultry farms and sullage from kitchens & bathrooms. Provision and maintenance of relevant Infrastructure are vital.

Cheng, thank you for your report. Very interesting statistics. I never though dirty water would harm more than wars. Also it is unbelievable that even today so many people spend numerous time to get some clean water. I wish I could read more about the water pollution in your country :)

Hi Cheng! Thanks for sharing your report on water pollution in Malaysia.
It was really shocking that that much trash is accumulated on the rivers every month.
Is it mainly thrown by industries or individuals? Either way, raising awareness of people seems really urgent. Thanks for your article again.
