Ivory Coast Lacks Electricity

by | 11-05-2017 01:42 recommendations 1

Today, in Ivory Coast, there is a great scourge which people are confronted to. Many people do not have access to an effective electricity service. How can it be possible for a country like Ivory Coast, which offers power to other countries, to face electricity problem?

In the commune of Port-Bouet precisely in the neighborhood of Gonzagueville, people are undergoing electricity problem. They do not get access to electricity normally. For example, if they get electricity in the morning, then it is sure that in the evening they will lack electricity. This situation was the source of great uprisings in many cities of the Country. For instance, in the month of April 2016, many uprisings exploded, the populations were unhappy firstly because of the bills they have to pay and secondly because they do not have access to good electricity services. During these uprising, people burnt the offices of the company in charge of distributing electricity. And this is only one of the consequences of what lacking electricity which is vital for the needs of human beings can bring.

The problem which is causing the bad distribution of electricity can be seen at the level of the company in charge of distributing power. As a matter of fact, we have only one company which exploits the distribution the distribution of power sector. Here again, we can notice the monopoly of the energy sector. It is impossible to get better electricity service if only one company has to serve a country of 22 million inhabitants. We need to let everybody invest in the energy sector then it gives the choice to the populations to choose the service of distribution of power they desire. It is also important now to put accent on investing in clean and renewable energy which can help to protect and save our environment.

It is unfortunate indeed. As mentioned by Mentor Daon, monopoly sometimes arises when the service provider is a government agency. In UAE too we have the government control over Electricity and Water Distribution. However they manage it very well and we have uninterrupted supply. Though I can understand that privatization and competition can help improve the service.

Hi Frederic! Thanks for sharing your report on electricity issue in your country.
You mentioned the problems related to monopoly, but I think it is also related to a form of the monopoly company. Since electricity is a public industry, some countries intentionally keep the monopoly by government to provide stable and affordable service. Is the company owned and run by government?

Frederic, thank you for your report. It seems like a lack of electricity is not getting better in Ivory Coast. You have mentioned the monopoly of one company distributing electricity is a main problem. I believe your suggestion, which is the investment of citizens, is quite an interesting idea. If you find any similar cases of what you??ve mentioned, please write another report about it.

Yes you are right Germaine, the monopoly of a sector of business always causes damages and it the population that suffers from that

We have the same problem in some region of our Country. Recently, in the Capital the power blackout is around 3 hours in the morning, and 3 hours in the evening.
maybe that is the problem of the monopoly of electricity

This is quite unfortunate. Hopefully more companies in the energy sector will begin emerging in Cote d'Ivoire to abate this issue.
