Development, Land Use and the Environment

by | 20-07-2017 06:11 recommendations 0

Hello everyone, for this month?s first report I wanted to raise the issue of development, land use in particular and the environment. Land use in terms of development is basically the altering of the earth?s natural surface for the use of human life, such as the establishments of settlements, and manufactories, etc? Now the major concern that at first was not noticed is the factor affecting the environment when natural forms such as trees, forests, and grassland are grazed for the construction of modern settlements and the likes. Land use however, is not just for the physical land (soil) but also the water bodies and other surroundings. At the initial stages of the development of our world little attention was given to our environment and want the consequences were if the natural land was degraded. As development grew fast and the environment started to get affected, problems of air pollution, global warming, extinction of plants and animals started to also grow at a fast rate. This started to affect human life and health is unimaginably extreme ways. After seeing consequences such as the rise in global warming nations of the world and their leaders are putting more focus on the issue driving regulations, policies, reforestation and afforestation programs and many other actions. Many countries have developed different regulations some of them are green area reserves, wildlife sanctuaries, and urban growth boundaries. In Ethiopia we have seen a major rise in environmental awareness as there have been government regulations on development and land use.

Hi Dawit! Thanks for sharing your view on development and human impacts on environment. I do agree with the point that excess use of natural resources by human is number one reason for every issue regarding resource depletion. We should find balance between our use and sustainability of earth.

Dawit, thank you for your report. We cannot stop using land and developing it, but at the same time we have to think of environment. The dilemma lies here. So there have been some regulations in Ehiopia. Could you tell us one of the most effective regulations? How it has got started and how it worked.

You are right Dawit. Urban development has indeed to be sustainable. Land as a resource is the habitat and home and source for many other resources. We have to use it judiciously and governments must implement stringent land laws.

As population and human aspirations increase, land becomes an increasingly scarce resource, calling for land-use planning. Land-use planning is important to mitigate the negative effects of land use and to enhance the efficient use of resources with minimal environmental impact. Before giving approvals, authorities should do feasibility study to review whether building house or factory on that land is the wisest option. Unsustainable land use should be curbed to ensure that the green cover is not reduced. Thanks for sharing.

Proper allocation of the land is one of the need in the present. The land is being degraded due to unmanaged use and the forest area is decreasing day by day.
