When production is taken as more important than the environment |

We?ve all heard the definition of sustainable development as the one where the current generation uses the resources it needs wihout endangering the needs of future generations. Nonetheless, in our present society the now is given more importance than the future and making profits is more important than sustainable development.
Humans center their lives around the consumption of goods and if we were given free reign over the resources we would deplete our planet in a couple of generations. But it is important to think about the future and the the needs of others if we want to be able to make progress. Let me give you an example of depletion of resources: in Argentina there are a lot of regions that are fertile that were left alone in the past but are now used for growing soy. Farmers and companies aren?t letting the soil rest and regenerate, which has led to dire situations in many cases to severe deforestation, droughts, erosion and floods.These conditions that are created are mostly affecting the poorer regions of the country where the impact of the depletion of this resources is big. I encourage people to think about their own consumption with this article. My example was of something on a big scale, but try to think of the times you use more than you need and throw away things to consume other things.

Carolina, thank you for your report. Interesting topic! I believe we are living in a time in which production is so much overvalued. No one knows how long it would take before we take the issue seriously, but I believe the Ambassadors are trying their best!

Hi Carolina! Thanks for sharing your view on sustainable development. Such cases of big companies and industries do affect our resources and environment in a huge scale, but as you mentioned, we should also focus on chaning ourselves and our uses first. Thanks for the article again!

@Carolina, I'm not totally agreeing with you, live for the future means losing our present, so instead of saying we should live for the future generation we actually must live our present in a proper way which allows the next generation to enjoy our good heritage. Thanks for sharing the report. ^_^

You are right Carolina. sustainable development has to be taken care of at a micro level too in addition to macro level. We need to think about our individual action before we advise others.

You are right. Today production, profit, economic growth are all given more importance as compared to the environment. Land is being overused for rapid urbanisation, water is over-exploited and so is farming. Everything is being done keeping in mind short term benefits without thinking of future generations. We must consume resources mindfully. Thanks for the report.
