Recycling by exchanging food for waste |

Food waste leads to waste of precious resources including water, land, energy, labour and capital and needlessly produce greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to global warming and climate change.
Environmentalists say that when food rots, it releases methane, a greenhouse gas, which the U.S. EPA says is 21 times more damaging to the environment than carbon dioxide. Food is the least recycled material and is second largest contributor to global warming.
Dubai Municipality recently launched the second phase of its campaign "Recover the Value of Your Waste" at LuLu Hypermarket, Al Barsha. Residents can now bring recyclable waste for exchange into coupons to buy food products. Abdul Majeed Abdul Aziz Al Saifaie, director of the Waste Management Department, said the first phase of this campaign collected two tonnes of household waste from the public. "This quantity emphasizes the public's positive interaction with the department's initiatives and the enhanced awareness on maintaining cleanliness of Dubai and its neighborhoods," he said. The first phase was launched at the Emirates Cooperative Society in Al Twar 3. This action plan is likely to be implemented throughout the year in different areas of the emirate.
This campaign spreads awareness not only on the importance of recycling non-perishables but also on reducing food waste. The campaign aims to promote sustainable development through interaction of all segments of the society with environmental issues and challenges. The campaign also addresses waste segregation at source to establish a culture of sorting waste from the source to maximize the recycling and avoid sending them into landfills. This will help Dubai in progressing its Integrated Waste Management Strategy. The most important requirement of any household waste recycling is segregating food and perishable waste from other waste. Often the mixing of such waste makes it very hard or environmentally and economically unfeasible to recycle the waste. |

Neha, thank you for your report. People get surprised when they find out that food waste emit so much greenhouse gas. Giving coupons for recyclable waste seems like a very effective measure. If it turns out successive other nations should try that.

Hi Neha! Thanks for sharing intersting campaign. It is so true that food and our resources are being overproduced and wasted. Recycling is one of the effective way to deal with this issue. There are a lot of initiatives to share what we don't need, but other people might want such as clothes, commodities and so on. Sharing food is also great way to decrease the waste and thus save energy!

Kudos to Dubai Municipality for this amazing community initiative 'Recover the value of your waste'. It will indeed be very helpful in raising awareness about the importance of waste minimisation through proper sorting of recyclable materials. Such programs play very important roles in activating the community participation to reduce pollution, conserve resources, divert the bulk of waste from landfill and keep the city clean. This will inculcate an attitude and habit of waste sorting and recycling and will enhance the level of environmental awareness among the residents.
The best part of this campaign is that they get something in reward when they give their household waste. Such a reward scheme inspires people. Its first phase in Ramadan was very successful. Hope this phase is even more successful and drives/inspires many more residents. Thank you for sharing.

Wow! That's a great initiative by the Dubai Municipality. Through this concept more recyclable waste is collected and the customers also feel motivated to recycle more as they are receiving coupons. I hope this idea is implemented not only in other outlets but all around the world.
Thank you for the well written report, Neha:)

Thanks for sharing this positive report Neha. This is yet another great initiative by Dubai Municipality to establish among residents, a habit of sorting waste at source itself and enhancing environmental awareness to reduce the landfills. 'Recover the Value of Your Waste'will indeed promote waste segregation and recycling efforts. It is a brilliant idea, through which the municipal authorities will be able to cut down the size of the landfills and get recyclable materials, while the supermarket will see more visitor resulting in more sales, even after accounting for the vouchers. A win-Win situation indeed!
