Mining and it's Problems

by Razaan Abakar | 20-08-2017 20:17 recommendations 0

Mining is the extraction of valuable minerals or other geological materials from the earth usually from an orebodylodeveinseamreef or placer deposits. These deposits form a mineralized package that is of economic interest to the miner.

Types of Mining:

1. Surface Mining: Scoop ore off surface of earth. two types:

a. Open pit Mining:
Funnel shaped hole in ground, with ramp spiraling down along side, allows moderately deep ore to be reached.

b. Strip Mining:
Blast, scoop off rock overburden, and then scoop out ore material. Fairly shallow. Economics of strip mining depend on stripping ratio. Large land area can be involved, especially for coal and bauxite.
  • cheap.
  • safe for miners.
  • large environmental destruction.
2. Underground Mining: Use of adits and shafts to reach deeply buried ores.
  • expensive.
  • hazardous for miners.
  • usually less environmental damage.
Environmental Problems of Mining:
  • Disposal of a large amount of rock and waste.
  • Noise.
  • Dust
  • Subsidence.
  • Acidified water.

Some time ago, I had also posted a similar article about the effect of Sand mining in Nepal. Mining is also one of the serious problem of my country. Bit in our country, the major issues are in case of Sand mining from river sources. This has caused a lot of serious problems like river widening, reduction in river bed stability, increase incidence of flood, impure water sources and many more. Some ameliorative measures in response of this arr to be taken soon.

Hi Razaan! Thanks for sharing your report on Mining.
Your report well explains the effects of mining on the environment. One thing that i want to add is that mining can cause underground water pollution as well, which is critial and takes a long time to recover.
