Urban Heat Island |
---|
The phenomenon wherein cities are vulnerable to heat waves are called Urban Heat Island. This is also when the city is relatively warmer that those places around it. Rapid urban growth, excessive usage of energy, putting artificial infrastructures and bulldozing those that are natural are only some of the reasons behind this phenomenon. ASEAN countries are especially prone to urban heat island because of its geographical position.
Extreme heat can endanger the human health. This also affects social activities, economic development, ecological balance, comfort and environmental preservation as a whole. Heat related illnesses such as heat stroke, exhaustion, cramps and many more can be felt by people residing in urban heat islands. Lighter colored surfaces and using green roofs can help mitigate the effects of urban heat areas. Being mindful of using our resources can also help. We are all humans and we should start acting now and researching more about phenomenons like this to avoid further damage. It is not too late. |

Hi Angel! Thanks for sharing your report on UHI.
Your report is a good overview of UHI, covering its definition, impacts and how to deal with this. It would be great if you could write more about what's happening in your country regarding UHI next time:)
