History Of Sanitation Day In Ghana
Sanitation is very important key to national development. Adequate sanitation and hygiene are all essential ingredients to ensure good human health. Unfortunately, Ghana is facing a great challenge as far as this issue is concern. This has led to the death of hundred living souls and is always increasing the budget of the country.
As the result of this, the ministry of local government and rural development engaged media practioners to take suggestions from the public on these action plans. Thus, environmental sanitation, decentralisation and financial empowerment of assemblies, small and micro enterprises development and job creation and social housing.
Suggestions and contributions were taken from people all over the country via journalists. So the former minister of local government and rural development, Mr. Julius Deborah said at a meeting that the ministry would involve the media, create religious platforms and collaborate with chiefs and traditional authorities to create the awareness of the public. He added that their plan was to remove garbage and clear chocked gutters in the country.
This was a good move, he made the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharabutu, ambassador of sanitation campaign. He interacted with stakeholders like King of Asante Kingdom, Asantehene, the moderators of the Presbyterian Church Of Ghana Professor Reverend Emmanuel Martey, the former Chief Of Justice Mrs Theodosia Wood, Inspector General Of Police Mr. Mohammed Ahmed Alhasssan and many more.
On September 17,2014, the National sanitation Day campaign was launched at LA trade fair centre. The ministry came up with a bye law that would make it compulsory for every Ghanaian to participate in the National sanitation day. The Law was adopted by all the assemblies and was obligatory for citizens to take part in the exercise. It means that citizens, communities, entities or organisations that do not participate in the exercise would be sanctioned.

Hi, Abass! I think it's great of Ghana to designate every first Saturday of the month as a national sanitation day. Through this campaign, I hope Ghana to get close to clean environment so to ensure their good health. I believe that they can overcome this critical situation gradually if all the members aware seriousness of their problem and participate in cleaning their environment. Thanks for your report!

Great report Abass, I too have heard about a government initiative on this topic for the first time, and I feel that this will be a great way not only to ensure that Ghana has a clean environment but also to raise awareness among the people and educate them about the problem their country is facing.

That's good, Abass Abdullah. In Liberia, we have a similar law. Every first Saturday, all businesses and office do not open until 10 A.M., in order for people to clean their environment. Great work!!!
