Sri Lanka is an agricultural country with 2500 years of history relating to agricultural economy. In ancient time Sri Lanka had identified as the eastern granary since the prosperous agriculture. Sri Lanka has an agriculture friendly climate with loamy lands. Northern Province of the country is mainly famous for the agriculture since they cultivate from ancient period. In the ancient period Northern Province called as kingdom of Anuradhapura operated in 377 BC (4th century). In that period, kings prospered their kingdom by building tanks which collect water in the rainy period and can use in dry season. Still we can see huge tanks in Northern province named as Parakrama samudraya(75km2), Kala wewa, tisa wewa and etc. Sustainability concept evolved at 4th century in Sri Lanka with that sustainable water consumption. The ancient farmers had an advanced agricultural technology to cultivate 1000 and more hectares. They used environmental friendly techniques to suppress weeds and insects in the agriculture.
After the British colonial, Sri Lankan economy has changed largely. Tea cultivation and industrial services has emerged while concealing traditional agriculture. With the industrial revolution and globalization new technologies and products come into the country. Different organization emerged with different products. Traditional farmers day by day withdraw from traditional environmental friendly agricultural techniques and adapt to new and easy ways like weedicides, pesticides, artificial fertilizers and other chemicals. With this novel conversion farmers did their cultivations last century.
Now we are in the 21st century. When considering about the Sri Lankan agricultural community, it?s a huge tragedy today. In current situation is most of the northern province are suffering from Chronic Kidney Disease and they are lack of pure drinking water in the area. Scientist has proved that their water sources has contaminated with the higher use of chemicals like weedicides and pesticides. Villagers are suffering from poverty since they cannot engage in an occupation. Their children also in a sorrowful situation with poverty and lack of nutrition , pure water. Their education has also threatened with this problem.
With the long term chemical usage in agricultural sector in Sri Lanka have contaminated overall system and have resulted in number of deadly diseases. It?s hard to reverse the negative impacts that occurs the environment. It takes lot of time to change this situation. Most dangerous thing is that it will be affected to our future generation also. Therefore it is important to rethink about the agricultural chemical usage all over the world.

Hi, Chalani! Thank you for your report on pesticide use in Sri Lanka. It's disappointing to hear that Sri Lankan farmers have abandoned the traditional environmentally friendly methods of farming to use pesticides, just because they are more convenient. Since it is now well known that chemical pesticides can cause harm to human health and the environment, I hope that Sri Lanka will decide to return to their original environmentally friendly methods or use other alternative methods. Great work!

Hi, Chalani! Thanks for your report. We cannot hesitate finding out an appropriate alternatives we could utilize for our agricultural environments. Farmers should understand how negatively chemical pesticides work on human health and overall eco-system. Also they need to substitute them with other environmentally friendly methods so to achieve agriculture production and environment protection at the same time.

Agreed it will take a lot of time to reverse the side effects & curb pesticide use. But Sri Lankan must take positive steps to mitigate the same.

Health should be given priority minimizing the use of pesticides. Alternatives to pesticides like biological method and integrated pest management have already become popular in agricultural sectors.

Last year when I visited Sri Lanka. I was impressed by its immense green cover. Sri Lanka should pay attention to the harmful effects that its people are exposed to because of pesticides and and chemicals used to increase the output of the agriculture. Good report Chalani.
