Festivals are a season of happiness and joy. They are the traditions being passed to us from our ancestors. Each and every one of us, nevertheless of our culture, religion and country take pride in celebrating our religions. Me and almost all of the Nepalese are now in the mid of celebrating the biggest festival of our country namely Dashain and Tihar. Dashain and Tihar are the major festival of Nepal celebrated for 15 and 5 days respectively. Dashain has already been celebrated in Nepal with exchange of blessing and happiness and now the Nepalese have started to decorate their house for Tihar. As explained festivals are an inherent part of our culture but the tragedy lies in the fact that along with the modernization of society, festivals have also been modernized and the level of environmental degradation is also increasing accordingly. Our prestigious festivals are now being a reason of environmental pollution. Every year the quantum of noise and air pollution caused due to loud music and bursting of crackers is increasing. This has been the cause of irritating noise pollution in the society. The streets are littered with the remnants of crackers. Similarly during the festivals a large no of animals are sacrificed to the god and their useless carcass is thrown carelessly in the river which is contaminating the local rivers and also creating fowl smell after they decay off. Similarly the level of water pollution during Chatt festival gets to the peak. Chatt is a major festival of Terai during which people worship the Sun god by dedicating fruits and flowers. These holy flowers and fruits are devoted in the river banks. Though this is one of our cultural traditions and it is to be respected but lack of proper management is creating pollution in the local rivers. So to conclude festivals are the pride of our country and it is meant to be celebrated with pride but while doing so we need to be careful enough to not cause any harm to our environment. Proper management and cleanliness should be done to celebrate our festival in a clean way. So I would like to request all of my mates to make a pledge to celebrate our festivals not only in a happy way but also in a clean way. |

Hi, Prayash! I'm glad that you chose to write about this topic, as I am also very interested in the topic as well. Many festivals and celebrations, such as the ones you mentioned, are problematic as they cause environmental pollution. However, the situation is difficult to resolve because many of these celebrations are related to religious or traditional events. Passing regulations against these celebrations faces a lot of controversy, since many people argue about the freedom of religion or traditional importance. I think that the important thing is to be able to know that while religious/traditional affairs are of course important, there should be efforts to prevent environmental damage from being caused. After all, the Earth's environment is something that we share with the whole world, and causing damage to the home that we share cannot be excused. Understanding and consideration of other people (and the other species on this Earth) is crucial, and appropriate compromises should be made. Thank you for your report!

Hi, Prayash! Thanks for your report. I've been watched firework festival in city Seoul, in my country South Korea, 1 weeks ago. It was total 2 hours for the firework and there were lots of food-truck which provide cooked foods. And when I saw the starting point of the firework, it was very near the riverside so to let ashes after firework to come down and flow through the river. Some of them flow through the air and spread to the other side like adjacent building and apartments. It's a beautiful event but I wondered about the air pollution and water pollution just like you did about Nepal's festival. It is only one day in a year but as there are many regions which celebrate their own festival or events due to traditions or certain anniversary, we cannot neglect the total effects that we could affect. And there are lots of countries which mean lots of festivals..! So, it's important to notice people to the aware importance of removing generated trash from the festival and also host institution should arrange the flow and shape of the festival to be environmentally friendly as much as possible. The vacancy left by the departed show who they are.
