On the occasion of the International Day for the Protection of the Ozone Layer on 16 September, I organized an awareness exhibition for children which is
comic after I translated it into Arabic (only for the exhibit).
There are currently four episodes:
- Ozzy Flies High
- Ozzy Goes Farming
- Ozzy Flies High
- Ozzy Flies High.
I chose the first one because of the simplicity of the subject and it is appropriate for children, introduce the ozone layer and how it protects us from UV rays and how the ozone hole occurs and the consequences of UV passing on living organisms and human health and how we can protect ourselves.
In my search for this story, I found that this character was created in Barbados, a Caribbean island at the cutting edge of the fight against climate change and the country that hosted the World Environment Day celebration in 2014: raise your voice... not the sea level, and here is the story:
" In 1997, Barbados sought to improve awareness of the necessity to protect the ozone layer and the character of Ozzy Ozone was born. A local artist created the printed cartoon series, but the government of Barbados holds the ownership and rights to the character.
Many public awareness campaigns have been held, and Ozzy Ozone has been reproduced on posters, key rings, erasers, pencils, mouse pads, pens, stickers, rulers, and refrigerators magnets. Ozzy was successful in Barbados that the character is now used globally by the UNEP in its ozone awareness activities, which include producing educational items for global distribution. In 2004 UNEP released a video in which Ozzy explains the threats to the ozone layer and shows children how they can protect themselves from the effects of ultraviolet radiation caused by ozone depletion. nearly 65 governments broadcast this video on Ozone day (September 16), reaching millions of viewers. it has been translated from English into 24 languages. the character of Ozzy is still used worldwide to spread the message on ozone layer protection. "
I think that art generally and especially comics are a good way to spread awareness.
After that, I found new comics about climate change and the ozone layer and there is a contest about it. I want to share this with you:

Hi, Abdessamad! Introducing environmental topics through comics is a great idea! Usually, when learning about environmental topics through explanatory passages, it is quite difficult to understand and people lose interest quickly. Explaining these topics through comics initially draws a lot of interest and is easily approachable, and the pictures in the comics will make the concepts easy to understand. Also, reading comics will be much more fun than reading long passages. The use of comics in explaining environmental topics seems especially suitable for raising awareness amongst youths. Actually, to be honest, I think comics will be more fun and interesting for adults as well :) Great job on your exhibition! Your comics look great!

Hi, Abdessamad! I think the comic is an easy and effective way to spread awareness toward general people, especially to the youth. It will take a short time to understand and get information compare to the written paper. The video is also great. We might need subtitle but the image and moving effect appeared in video is sufficiently effective to make world people understand and follow the way that the video editor wants.
Thanks for your sharing!
