Medical and electronic waste management in Nepal

by Prayash Pathak (Chalise) | 21-11-2017 14:22 recommendations 0

In a board sense, anything that does not come into further use is classified as waste. Waste have been a major hazard to our environment. All of them are the  cause of different type of pollutions that has been degrading our environment. Household and  industrial waste have been problematic for a long time. Now with the increasing modernization, new type of waste have started to emerge. They are electronic waste and medical waste. This type of waste are new to developing country like us and the concept of managing them is not well known. So lack of proper management of such waste is creating huge problems.

Electronic products that no more can be used as per their original purpose and are left back in houses/offices as wastes are e-wastes. E-wastes are considered hazardous, as certain components of some electronic products contain materials that are hazardous, depending on their condition and density. Computer wastes that are land filled produces contaminated leachates, which eventually pollute the groundwater. Acids and sludge obtained from melting computer chips, if disposed on the ground causes acidification of soil.

Similarly medical waste includes all the useless medical materials that are disposed from the hospitals. This includes used syringes, contaminated bottles, expired medicines, damaged organs and many more. The Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP) estimates 13,613.5 tonnes of waste are generated by health institutions across the country every year. Up to 25 percent of these wastes are hazardous. According to WHO 2 million cases of new HIV patients is due to the use of old contaminated syringe worldwide. This type of waste are very dangerous as they can become a prime source of communicating diseases from one place to another.

In Nepal proper management and disposal of such waste is not done effectively. Due to careless authority, this waste are just dumped off in a nearby landfill sites or water sources. The most proper management to medical wastes will be establishment of medical waste management facility in every hospitals to dispose their waste in a safe way. In case of e- waste they can be easily reused and recycled. Some enthusiast volunteers have already started the noble act of collection of such e-waste and its recycling to a new material that is either sold or distributed to the needy.

Hi, Prayash! You've covered two of the most important current-day waste problems. With the vast advancements in medicine and technology, medical and electronic waste has become serious problems in the last several years. I agree that in the case of e- waste, recycling is key. Not only does recycling e- waste prevent pollution of the environment, it allows us to retrieve precious metals and other valuable resources. As for the case of medical waste, safe disposal by professionals is needed. Medical waste is collected at hospitals and pharmacies, so they can be safely processed and disposed of. Great work!

Hi, Prayash! You'd really pointed out one of the main points of the waste problems. A The Proper management system should be progressed to handle those toxic and hazardous waste materials. Not only the electronic wastes and medical wastes but also those from laboratory or research center are also greatly dangerous and need to be handled in a safe way!
    Thanks for your informative report!

Truely, This is new problem to developing country like us. Related authority should be more conscious on it. People should be made aware about reuse and recycle of those wastes.

In the case of 2-wastes, the youths can come forward and take necessary initiatives. For the management of medical waste the government, hospital authorities should take proper steps without any further ado.
