FUTURE OF WASTE MANAGEMENT In NIGERIA

by Victor eke mba | 29-11-2017 00:05 recommendations 1

In developed and normal societies, waste management simply means the collection, keeping, treatment and disposal of waste in such a way as to render then harmless to human and animal life-the ecology and environment generally.
It could also be said to be the organised and systematic dumping and channeling of waste through or into landfills or pathways to ensure that they are disposed of with attention to acceptable public health and environmental safeguard. Proper waste management will result in the abatement or total elimination of pollution.
In Nigeria, managing waste disposal has become a major concern despite several attempts by successive governments and private organisations in that direction. That is why it is a common sight across the country today to see heaps of festering waste dumps in almost every nooks and crannies. Residential apartments, markets, waterways, highways, streets and undeveloped plots of land have been turned to waste dumps for many households. No wonder many say that in Nigeria, waste increases in a geometrical progression and collection and disposal is at an arithmetical progression.
It is obvious that some factors are responsible for poor waste disposal management. These include lack of adequate funding, excessive population, lack of comprehensive legal framework and enforcement of the existing regulations
Others include low investment in infrastructure, inadequate human capacity for administrative and technical issues, wrong attitude of the public towards solid waste disposal, poor planning, low data management and uncontrolled urbanisation, uncoordinated institutional functions, low academic research and industry linkages and lack of the needed political will on the part of the leaders.
Until these challenges are properly, boldly and diligently addressed by relevant authorities and individuals, managing waste disposal will remain a nightmare and recurring decimal in Nigeria.
It was very encouraging and pleasing to know that many major steps are been taken by Nigeria government to tackle the high rate of waste careless disposal in the country, it is my pleasure to share with you the waste management event hosted by my state government - the Abia state government on tackling waste improper disposal in the state.
The waste-to-wealth programme for South-East region, has been flagged off in Abia State by the Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu.
Speaking at the flag off of the programme, Onu said if the programme was properly implemented, it will strengthen the place of science, technology and innovation in the country?s search for a new beginning.
According to the minister, the programme would also help move the economy from being resource-based to knowledge-based and innovation driven for the good of all. Onu expressed confidence that through the wealth programme and using appropriate technologies, Nigeria, will ensure that what becomes waste for one house hold, can become useful for another.
?Waste generated in one household can become a source of income for people. Science , technology and innovation will help make this possible,? he assured. ?It will help create wealth and jobs, reduce poverty, help defeat hunger and stimulate national consciousness in the power of science and technology as an important instrument for nation building.?
He assured that APC-led Government is committed to do all that is necessary in the interest of the nationa to accelerate the pace of national development anchored on the effective deployment of science and technology and innovation.
?What is being witnessed is a testimony of this resolve as we will continue to work very hard and will not rest until it helps this administration to use science to lay solid foundation of the transformation of the nation to attain the greatness that Almighty God has destined for it, he explained further.
Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu in Abia – flags off waste-to-wealth programme for South East zone.
He called on Nigerians to lend their support to the initiative as it will clean up cities, towns and villages and use the waste to produce useful products and services for the people. Present at the flag off ceremony are the Abia state Governor, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu, who earlier expressed joy tjat Abia is the first state to witnessed this development.
Other dignitaries are the former Governor of Anambra state Mr Peter Obi, The Minister of Labour, Chris Ngige, Deputy Governor of Abia state Ude Oko Chukwu, one time Deputy Governor , Chief Acho Nwakanma and and others.

Hi, Victor! Thank you for your report on the future of waste management in Nigeria. Your description of the current situation of waste disposal in Nigeria sounds like it cannot be sustained too long, as the areas that can hold waste will soon become supersaturated. It's exciting to hear about the new 'waste-to-wealth' program that the Nigerian Minister of Science and Technology has flagged off. The concept of the program sounds great, and I'm eager to find out how waste can be converted into something useful. I'll be looking forward to future reports! Great work :)
