Interesting Ways of Getting Rid of Plastic Waste

by Gadala Isaac | 03-12-2017 06:59 recommendations 0

In 2015, it was estimated that about 600 tonnes of plastic are disposed of in Uganda daily with the capital city, Kampala accounting for the biggest portion of these.  Most of the plastic garbage is left uncollected and ends up in drainage channels, wetlands, natural water sources, and manholes, undeveloped plots of land and on the roadsides. In the rural areas, garbage is left to decompose on its own (and it's so unfortunate that plastics take thousands of years to decompose so, this turns out to be massive soil pollution).

Should we just get rid of plastic bottles by burning them, an activity that gives off toxic fumes to our environment? Bury them and contaminate the soil for thousands of years? Or just helplessly look at them as they hip up and take up space in our environment? Of course not!

Plastic bottles when filled with soil can be used to make simple vegetable gardens more so for people living in urban areas(putting the principle of vertical gardens into consideration), as bricks for constructing simple houses for people, buildings for animals on farms, water catchment tanks, septic tanks, commercial ware houses and roads . This way, we can even get into an era where plastic waste is more demanded than any other material for making construction bricks as they are cheap(given the fact that bottles are readily available).

I also came across an initiative by Plastic Bottle Village, ''the Carbon Footprint Sticker''. Because people feel there's no tangible reward to picking plastics, plastic bottle village thought of a way of providing incentives such as food to people who picked plastic bottles. Visitors to Panama are encouraged to contribute to the cause of plastic reduction in Panama, after which they are given footprint stickers. Once a visitor has finished consuming a beverage, they are encouraged to put these stickers on the bottles such that any person who picks it can take it to the organization and later be rewarded with a small gift. These plastic bottles have been used to as building materials in structures for homes on the island.

This way, I believe we can get rid of some of the wastes in an enjoyable and friendly way.

Hi, Isaac! Thank you for introducing an interesting way to reuse plastic! Reusing items that would have otherwise been thrown out is a very effective and important way to reduce waste. This especially goes for the case of plastic, since it is very durable and can be easily reused in many ways. Some easy ways to reuse plastic items include making storage compartments or stationery utensils. However, I think reusing plastic bottles as planters is one of the best ways to reuse plastic, because it has a double effect on the environment: reducing waste and growing plants! Nice work :)
