The initiative was aimed to convey the municipality's message to the pet owners to take care of the cleanliness of the city as an individual responsibility by consciously dealing with the waste of their dogs when they take their dogs for a walk on the public streets. Pet owners were asked to keep plastic bags dedicated for this purpose. Kids become soil scientists as part of Dubai Municipality's awareness drive to mark World Soil Day Published in Gulf News, December 8, 2017 The World Soil Day is observed on December 5, by the FAO to raise awareness on the importance of healthy soil and advocating for the sustainable management of soil resources. This year's theme, 'Caring for the Planet Starts from the Ground' — focuses on encouraging people to realize that soil health is connected to our own health. With more than 80% of the soil in the UAE being sandy and only 13% suitable for irrigated farming, UAE faces a scarcity of this natural resource, which is vital for plant growth. Considering this the Environment Department of Dubai Municipality is marking the World Soil Day at Kite Beach in Dubai this weekend. The three-day community awareness program that concluded today (9th December 2017) included a series of performances, workshops and interactive activities, mainly targeting children. Soil experiments for children and adults turned the public into scientists conducting simple experiments that demonstrated basic soil principles such as the formation and content of soil and how readily it erodes.
