The Diocese of San Pablo in the Province of Laguna conducted the Laudato si Diocesan Ecology Summit: Mapangalagang Sambayanan sa Inang Kalikasan (A Caring Community for Mother Earth) on November 25, 2017 at the Canossa College in San Pablo City. 45 parishes were represented or more than half of the parishes that compose the Diocese. In all, there were over 200 participants in the Summit. This Summit was held as a pre-conference for the upcoming Laudato si Conference to be held in February next year as organized by the Ecclesiastical Province of Manila under Cardinal Chito Tagle.
In the morning, there were several speakers in the persons of Bishop Buenaventura Famadico, who welcomed the participants to the Summit. Bishop Famadico heads the Diocese of San Pablo, which has a very active Ministry of Ecology. In fact, last July the Diocese conducted the First CALABARZON Disaster Risk Resilience Summit, which trained the delegates in four areas of preparedness, warning, response and relief, and rehabilitation. This was a response to the earthquakes that people have been experiencing recently in the Southern Tagalog provinces as the epicenter.
Keynote speaker of the Summit was Fr. Pete Montallana, Founder & Chair of Save Sierra Madre Movement. He gave a talk on Laudato si Mind & Spirituality and shared with us the challenges they have experienced in order to protect the area around the Sierra Madre mountains. Mr. Matthias Gelber, also known as The Greenman, shared his lifestyle which leads to a very low carbon footprint. Awards were also given to winners of the Little Garden Herbal Contest.
In the afternoon, there were breakout sessions to discuss the problems encountered, the solutions offered and action plans of the different communities, the time frame and persons involved. Each group then reported on their discussions and this was facilitated by professors from the University of the Philippines. An interesting comment is how the commonality of the problems seemed to have a factor that was not mentioned outright, but a factor nevertheless and that is ?population growth?. I think, this is due to the fact that most environmental problems are anthropogenic in nature because they are caused by human activity. I t was suggested that what we need is ?enculturation of environmentalism? or promoting an attitude of being environmentally-friendly particularly among the young. We should integrate into academic curriculum how to cultivate the correct attitude towards the environment.

Great report Bam. The Summit must have been very informative and a platform to learn more about the environment. I like the fact that after all the lectures and talks the members had a chance to discuss problems and find solutions. I agree with the solution obtained, educating the younger is the only way to ensure a green future for the generations to come. :D
