What can we do for our environment?

by Sudarshan Sreeram | 15-01-2018 19:47 recommendations 0

We are an integral part of our environment and humans cannot be separated from our environment.  Our environment is what we see around us. It consists of both living and nonliving things. For example, all types of physical (rocks, trees), chemical (air, water) and other natural forces (lightning, wind). Living beings live in their environment, i.e., the space around us.  All living beings continuously interact with the environment around them and seek protection to changing conditions around them. For example, protection from floods, earthquakes, lightning, etc.

We need our environment for our survival.  As we have witnessed in recent times, due to industrialization, a major portion of our environment has been destroyed by man and his actions.  His actions include destruction of forests, animal species, valuable plants and polluting water.  Due to extensive destruction (example rainforests of Amazon or plains of Serengeti), some of the plant and animal species have become extinct and some are close to extinction.  As several organizations across the world relentlessly try and save the environment, every common citizen should first acknowledge the issue of environmental destruction before proposing a solution.   This calls for not just mere expression of words but more as a wholehearted commitment from every human being on this planet.

A joint voice to save the environment should be propagated through social media to all corners of the world.  With the advances in technology, social media plays a big role in complementing our efforts to save our environment.  For example, major efforts to save environment such as ban on cutting trees or ban on ivory trade should be widely publicized and people involved in such trades should be provided other job opportunities.  For this support from government is necessary.  Youths play a very big role in being advocates of bringing this change to our world.  Effecting the change in every citizen to become more responsible to their environment.  For example, disposal of wastes in public places or polluting rivers with chemical wastes is a predominant problem in countries like India, need solutions that are permanent.

The forums such as Tunza should expand and include more members from every corner of the society where environmental awareness is less.    This would bring all the youths towards the single voice and alignment with the objective of protecting our environment.  Some initiatives such as ban on plastic bags should happen worldwide and not just in a local community.  But a local community is a good starting point but such practices should spread everywhere and should emerge as a global standard.

Environment education should be a part of every single curriculum across the world.  This should be made available across the world in all languages.  The word spreads quickly through education and good environmental initiatives from school should be recognized.   One important issue that we all face is sustainability of such initiatives that often tend to become dependent on people.  As people move jobs or places, these initiatives are lost or tend to stagnate after a while.  In order to preserve these good practices, it is important to clearly establish a network chain in our society that helps sustain such good initiatives.

Hi, Sudarshan! I agree that using the internet to spread environmental awareness is a very powerful and effective method in today's society. Using the internet, we can simply upload an environmental message and it will reach millions of people. Also, posting on the internet is not one-sided. using the internet makes it possible for people all over the world to communicate and give each other feedback. Just like here at TUNZA Eco-Gen! :) Environmental education is also very important in spreading awareness, for people of all ages. Thank you for your report!
