Colombia is a country immensely rich in biodiversity, proof of this is that it is the most biodiverse country in the world per square meter, owns 14% of the flora and fauna of the planet, and is the second most biodiverse in the world in abundance and species richness. The 50% of the territory is unexplored, so both species continue to be discovered, "Smithsonian Institute scientists discovered a small carnivorous mammal that is located between Colombia and Ecuador. It is the first species of carnivore discovered in America in the last 35 years "(Newspaper El Espectador, 2013). Even being so little explored owns 20% of the birds in the world and is number 1 in amphibians.
On the other hand is a country full of water. It has 2 oceans, the Pacific and the Atlantic. There are 2,900 km of coastline with a variety of unique ecosystems in the world. Water sources come from rivers, streams, creeks, ponds, moors and rivers. Colombia has 57% of the global area of moorland, the Sumapaz moorland is the largest in the world, located in Cundinamarca. Likewise is the Cano Cristales River, which is considered the most beautiful river in the world, located in the Serrania de La Macarena in Meta province. (Blog Colombia Curiosa, 2013)
This country has nearly all the planet's ecosystems. The Amazon owns 42% of the territory of the country, is the least populated area of the nation and has an area of 483119 km2 of forest. The Amazon is the largest nature reserve in the world. If importance is attached to containing 20% of fresh water and produces a fifth of the oxygen we breathe on Earth. Colombia despite having only 1% of the planet's surface holds 10% of all biodiversity. (Blog Colombia Curiosa, 2013)
Unfortunately, the nation's natural resources are being damaged by the expansion of mining in the country and the introduction of products unfriendly planet. The lack of commitment from the state for the protection of ecosystems coupled with the lack of international support, difficult to develop a sustainable economy in Colombia. By having 10% of the world's biodiversity has a responsibility, but it is clear that the responsibility needs international partners to protect ecosystem services and thus ensure the existence of human life.
