Snow in the World's hottest desert |
---|
My sincere apologies for the late arrival of my last report. This year in January, we saw snow fall in the Sahara, the world?s hottest desert covering desert dunes in a layer up to 40cm deep. Well, it?s not something new in Algeria as the country experiences winter but rather strange, most especially in the southern part where the Sahara is found. This could be like the third time snow has fallen there in a duration of a century. Snow started falling on the Algerian town of Ain Sefra also known as the gateway to the desert in the early hours of Sunday morning, giving children an opportunity to race each other down the slopes. Rising temperatures meant it began to melt later in the day. Many May attribute the sudden change to the Cold currents coming from Europe which has experienced shocking volumes of snow in some countries like France while others may directly relate it to climate change( me inclusive). Well, let?s wait till the next winter season so we can have a better judgement. |
