World Meteorological Day-2018:

by Bharat Adhikari | 23-03-2018 19:29 recommendations 0

World Meteorological Day:

The date of the establishment of the World Meteorological Organization in 23 March 1950 has been named World Meteorological Day. This organization announces a slogan for World Meteorology Day every year, and this day is celebrated in all member countries. World Meteorological Day is celebrated every year on 23 March to commemorate the entry into force in 1950 of the convention that created the World Meteorological Organization. The day also highlights the contribution that National Meteorological and Hydrological Services make to the safety and well-being of society. The United Nations' (UN) World Meteorological Day is annually held on or around March 23 to remember the World Meteorological Organization's establishment on that date in 1950. Many different activities and events are organized for this occasion.

Each year during these worldwide celebrations, there is a focus on a theme of topical interest. The theme for the year 2018 is "weather- ready, climate smart".

The theme recognizes the role that societies have in shaping our nation and focuses on the crucial role of meteorological services in strengthening the safety and resilience of communities to weather and climate events.

Background:

World Meteorological Day often features various events such as conferences, symposia and exhibitions for meteorological professionals, community leaders and the general public. Some events aim to attract media attention to raise meteorology's profile. Many prizes for meteorological research are presented or announced on or close to World Meteorological Day. These prizes include:

?         The International Meteorological Organization Prize.

?         Professor Dr. Vilho Väisälä Award

?         The Norbert Gerbier-Mumm International Award

Many countries issue postage stamps or special postage stamp cancellation marks to celebrate World Meteorological Day. These stamps often reflect the event's theme or mark a country's meteorology achievements.

Weather-ready, climate-smart:

The ever-growing global population faces a wide range of hazards such as tropical cyclone storm surges, heavy rains, heat waves, droughts and many more. Long-term climate change is increasing the intensity and frequency of extreme weather and climate events and causing sea level rise and ocean acidification. Urbanization and the spread of megacities means that more of us are exposed and vulnerable. Now more than ever, we need to be weather-ready, climate-smart and water-wise.

This is why one of the top priorities of WMO and National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs) is to protect lives, livelihoods and property from the risks related to weather, climate and water events. Thereby, WMO and its Members support the global agenda on sustainable development, climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction.

WMO and National Meteorological Services design operational services ranging from daily weather forecasts to long-term climate predictions that help society to be weather-ready and climate-smart. Further National Hydrological Services are essential for the sound management of freshwater resources for agriculture, industry, energy and human consumption, so that we can be water-wise. These services empower us to manage the risks and seize opportunities related to weather, climate and water.

Early warning systems and other disaster risk reduction measures are vital for boosting the resilience of our communities. Climate services can inform decisions on both climate change mitigation and adaptation. Hydrological monitoring increases our understanding of the water cycle and so supports water management.

Worthy reading the article bharat brother. Relating meterology with agriculture it has great contributions and the early weather forecasting plays vital role in agriculture. Every year their is great destruction as we couldn't forecast the weather in appropriate time.

Hello Bharat, just as Gyeongrin mentor said, the recent keyword for anti-climate change is 'climate smart and weather ready' aspect.
Since it is way too complex and to acknowledge changes and effects in various fields under climate change, we are also getting deeply into this issue and problems.
The monthly report for March was upon wetland and it aimed to ask all the ambassadors to think about 'what is the cycle and relationship between climate and wetland'.
Think about this as you have mentioned in your previous reports, and let me soon upload the monthly theme for April!

Hello Bharat, I've just read your report on world water day!
Now I am again amused by your second report about World Meteorological Day, which was held today. I think the theme 'weather- ready, climate smart' does reflect the current status quo very well because, climate change has become a worldwide issue nowadays. It was also well shown in previous reports from our ambassadors about climate change. If any ambassador is interested in this particular theme, I suggest you to take a quick look over the reports!!
Anyway, thanks for sharing great infos!!
    Nice report :)
