Earth Hour-2018: "Let Nature Shine"

by Bharat Adhikari | 24-03-2018 14:37 recommendations 0

Earth Hour:

Earth Hour is a worldwide movement organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). The event is held annually encouraging individuals, communities, and businesses to turn off non-essential electric lights for one hour, from 8:30 to 9:30 pm on a specific day towards the end of March, as a symbol of commitment to the planet. It was started as a lights-off event in Sydney, Australia, in 2007. Since then, it has grown to engage more than 7,000 cities and towns across 187 countries and territories.

Occasionally, in years when Holy Saturday falls on the last Saturday of March, Earth Hour is moving a week early rather than its traditional date.

Earth Hour is the largest global environmental movement with enthusiastic participation from various sectors, which attracts attention from large sections of the community every year.

Earth Hour 2018 will be on March 24, from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm. The theme for Earth Hour 2018 is 'Let Nature Shine'.

Let Nature Shine:

The devastating consequences of the loss of nature underpins our health, well-being and prosperity, including our access to clean air, freshwater, food and even several medicines. To adequately address this crisis, we must urgently reduce carbon emission and prepare for the consequences we are already experiencing. Climate challenges are in no doubt enormous, yet there is a silver line if all of us work together to combat climate change by supporting Earth Hour, the world largest environmental movement. The theme for Earth Hour 2018 is 'Let Nature Shine'. Apart from switching off the lights at 08:30 pm on 24 March 2018, we can also support our many concurrent initiatives to realize a solar-powered city and adopt a sustainable lifestyle to protect biodiversity across the planet.

The Earth Hour Global FAQ page states:

Earth Hour does not purport to be an energy/carbon reduction exercise, it is a symbolic action. Therefore, we do not engage in the measurement of energy/carbon reduction levels for the hour itself. Earth Hour is an initiative to encourage individuals, businesses and governments around the world to take accountability for their ecological footprint and engage in dialogue and resource exchange that provides real solutions to our environmental challenges. Participation in Earth Hour symbolizes a commitment to change beyond the hour.

A 2014 study published in Energy Research and Social Science compiled 274 measurements of observed changes in electricity demand caused by Earth Hour in 10 countries, spanning 6 years, and found that the events reduced electricity consumption an average of 4%. The study noted the policy challenge of converting Earth Hour's short-term energy saving into longer-term actions, including sustained changes in behavior and investment.

Hello Bharat, thanks for reminding other ambassadors of Earth Hour.
Though we always do try at least to participate in Earth Hour program, we sometimes do forget its theme or aims in specific to achieve.
Just a simple symbolic event does not make a sound or voice among people, but when it gets iconic, its effect is uncountable as you may know!

Keep up with your work! I will look forward to your activities!

    Hello Bharat!
Thanks for informing us about the 2018 'Earth hour' day!!
I agree to the report that these actions does have a symbolic meaning which goes further deep than just simply trying to reduce electricity consumption for the moment being. I hope by this activity, more people could care more for our mother Earth.
I remember going out stargazing with my near friends at last year's Earth hour. It really is a good memory to me. If you dont have a clear idea on what to do on Earth hour, why not go for a stargazing walk like me? :)

    Thanks for the nice report!!
