Oil Disaster in the Gulf of Mexico

by Jeewon Shin | 19-08-2018 23:11 recommendations 0

The International Environmental Law (IEL) case that I would like to introduce is the ?Deepwater Horizon Litigation? in 2010.  This incident began shortly after the explosion of a drilling rig called ?Deep Horizon?, which resulted in a massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, and has continued since April 10, 2010.  The Deepwater Horizon oil spill goes by the name that we know of; the oil spill in Gulf of Mexico.  This disaster is considered as the largest marine oil spill in history.  Everyone did everything they could to stop the oil from harming the marine life and the environment.  They had done amazing work, but couldn?t stop a number of dolphins and other marine animals from dying at a very fast rate.  Some marine animals developed disabilities and studies show that animal lives which were disposed to the oil spill would have spread cardiotoxicity or other diseases to shorten their life span.

Even though the company, or BP, which is responsible for this incident is paying huge penalty, they cannot replace the life of the innocent animals that have lost their lives in this incident nor the huge hole that they have created in the environment.  I think in order to reduce the number of incidents like this we should reduce the number of offshore oil drilling.  Cutting out oil habit would be hard but we need to try to use clean energy rather than fossil fuels.  It will take a long time for us so that is why we should start right now.  Even though it would take some time, the day when we use renewables as much as we do fossil fuels will come.  The sooner we change our habit the sooner the day would come.

(Despite several trials, this photo is not working. It is supposed to be the first photo in the link below.)

Hello Jeewon, I do remember a huge oil spill incident that happened in our country more than 10 years ago. It was such a catastrophic event to happen, but a lot of volunteers gathered up at seashore, to clean up sunken oil or oil stuck onto rocks or sea animals.
The best way to solve such problem is to enhance or develop the internal structures of cargo ship and prevent misled navigation not to crash on invisible rocks beneath the sea level.
    Thanks for your report!

    Hello Jeewon
Oil spillage is something that is really hard to recover. Just as the report points out, no matter how much the responsible compensates for the incident the already damaged nature hardly comes back. So in prevention is more important than the post-management, and in that sense turning away from fossil fuel to renewable energy would be a good start.
    Thanks for the report!

Thanks for writing about this Jeewon. That must have been a very sad incident that must not be allowed to happen again. It should serve as a cautionary tale to all those who are dealing in oil.

Well reported Jeewon. I fully agree with you in the implementation of renewable energy right now. Usage of fossil fuels will cause more and more loss of land and marine area and animals both.
