Following the recently ongoing land restitution, redistribution and expropriation ?news headlines? encountered and endured in portrayed within South Africa, serves as an indication of land need.

However, the fight for land within the communities in goal of socio-economic ailment restoration and growth, is key par development achievement. However, I the state of present land is question requiring proper analysis understanding.

Although wealthy in production capacity- judged by the export produce shared within the global trade community, the South African land contains a ?virus? which, suggest potentials a disease.

Acid Mine Drainage (AMD), known by visual quality as ?yellowish? content in colour, is an acidic metal outflow. It is on verge of destroying the land wealth within the Republic in terms of soil neutrality, composition, production and sustainability.

This acidic outflow is a culminated process of chemical factors: toxic chemical sediments fusing together underground, resulting a highly radioactive chemical (reaction) therefore.

This content is mainly gains strength due by ground water beneath ground, which is discharged off into water resources such as rivers, streams and wetlands.

According to research compilation and community analysis understanding; the spill content is discharged off by chemical, industrial mainly corporates which undertake mining practices and refinery processes.

It follows a warning of the high risk levels posed and outlined within key resources areas being contaminated. Due to the contents acid presence, natural vegetation and water resources are thus contaminated and polluted-becomes an environmental and human hazard; inhaled nor when consumed, are not fit in consumption nor use due to the high radioactive exposure contained within.

Mining corporates have abdicated the intended industrial principles of equitable corporate, socio- citizenry governance relationship. These corporates are tasked to rehabilitate the natural soil and resource ecosystems positioned near, yet- none of such action is performed.

Many communities are thus affected- health and agricultural wise. The produce is not growing and developing to scale and strength entitled and envisaged. Livestock features cows, chickens commonly-believed to sustain financial livelihood, extinct. Nevertheless, the public is too affected as impact is sustained from untreated, radioactive water content. According to newspaper and other print media houses, the cost attributed to damage crop and livestock financial loss is hefty-high. Many of the people are rural-area bound and don?t possess nor qualify for insurance cover upon loses endured due to socio-economic backgrounds livelihoods.

Most of these communities and village zone rely upon buck-system water supply from rivers and wetlands, thus become exposed to AMD during consumption, as water sources aren?t fit anymore.

However, government, corporates and NGO have embark upon formulating and presenting green projects, initiatives, programmes, as rehabilitation innovation and strategy to combat Acid Mine Drainage in South Africa.

    Hello Xolani
As water could be said as one of the most important and pivotal resources for surviving, the contamination by acid from mining activities is really a problem that should be more meddled about. And it is true that the polluter pays principle isn't quite working well in the mining industry. The fine isn't enough to recover what is done and industries just diminish their responsibility through this procedure and no one is actually being responsible for this damage.
It is time that we really make some change.
    Thanks for the report!

    Hi Xolani!

With the issue of Acid Rock drainage plaguing our country, what is the use of talk about land expropriation? What good is land that has no value in terms of environmental yield for produce? For the nourishment of livestock?

I know of the river located in Mpumalanga where the river's pH was a frightening 5. It's a big hazard, and what makes matters would is that the polluter pays principle is not as effect in the mining industry as we would assume. Because even if a mine pays a fine for producing AMD, the money will not be enough to stop the endless volumes of contaminated groundwater that would poison our rivers, livestock, plants etc.

We should really tackle this virus before we can start considering land divisions.

Thank you so much for your report Xolani!

    Take a bow!
