Decrease of Sidi Mohamed Ben Ali lake water level

by Abdessamad Belfekroun | 18-10-2018 20:48 recommendations 1

¡°Sidi Mohamed Ben Ali¡± lake is 3 kilometers away from  ¡°Sidi Bel Abbes¡± city and is connected to ¡°Mekerra¡± valley which passes through the city by two channels. So, It contributes to the purification of contaminated water and protects the city of Sidi Bel Abbes from floods.

The lake has been hit by an ecological disaster due to the decrease in water level because of:

-Disruption of the manual pumping station that feeds the lake by water
-The first outlet of the station is closed by a company which builds a wastewater pumping station until the completion of the works while the second outlet is blocked by wastes
-The two channels that supply the lake with water are in a deteriorating situation, some parts are destroyed and others are blocked by waste and grass.

The water level of the lake has decreased by 3 meters, and water is no longer submerged in reeds, which are the habitat for many species of birds, especially ducks, and the aquatic organisms compete for Dissolved Oxygen  in water  and Water Snakes have become a threat to the lake's visitors by contact¡¯s increasing with them.

Civil society in Sidi Bel Abbes sounded the alarm and the authorities and various governmental bodies and private companies intervened to save the lake. The channels are now being cleaned of waste and mud and repaired.

It was also noted the need to put the lake under serious management after solving this problem.

    Hello Abdessamad
Good water management is a critical but hard thing. In my region, we also have problems with dam management with the clashes between various stakeholders. Particularly we are having problems with the conservation of cultural heritage and the procuring of the needed water amount. It is good to hear that local authorities are trying something to mitigate the issue.
    Thanks for the report :)

Hello Abdessamad, it must have been very afraid and unfortunate to see such an incident directly.
Managing proper waste management system and resuming manual pump seems to be in a hurry.
Hope it gets fixed out soon!

    Good day Abdessamad!

It is quite unfortunate that the source of water that feeds into the lake had to halted. The environmental management system should have taken the necessary precautions to ensure that the lake would still flow at its normal rate. One way could've been to set a recharge pump system that would pump water into the lake.

One must understand that a lake forms an integral part of the ecosystem, so if the lake fails to sustain itself then, other liked ecosystems will fail as well.

I am relieved that authorities have taken light of this serious issue and are now solving it.

    Thank you for reporting Abdessamad!

    Abdessamad,

Its good to hear that the local authorities have saved the lake from further fall in volume.

These are similar problems some water bodies are facing. Yes, it is important that appropriate security measures be taken to avoid a repeat of such issues.

    Thanks for the report.
