Silent Spring

by Kushal Naharki | 09-11-2018 22:21 recommendations 0

Haphazard use of pesticides has turned out to be a major cause of Environment Pollution. Pesticides has reduced to water, land, air pollution along with impact on the health of the living beings. Pesticides kills the pests and this adversely affects the biodiversity and environmental balance too. This was explained by the book ¡°Silent Spring¡±. This book was named one of the 25 greatest science books of all time by the editors of Discover Magazine. Did you know? It is supposed that the issue of pesticides affecting the environment was voiced by this book.

"Silent Spring" is an environmental book by Rachel CarsonThe book was published on 27 September 1962 and it documented the adverse effects on the environment of the indiscriminate use of Pesticides. The overriding theme of this book is the powerful and often negative effect humans have on the natural world.

Carson's main argument is that pesticides have detrimental effects on the environment; she says these are more properly termed biocides because their effects are rarely limited to the target pests. DDT is a prime example, but other synthetic pesticides many of which are subject to bioaccumulation are scrutinized. Carson accuses the chemical industry of intentionally spreading disinformation and public officials of accepting industry claims uncritically. Most of the book is devoted to pesticides' effects on natural ecosystems, but four chapters detail cases of human pesticide poisoning, cancer, and other illnesses attributed to pesticides.

    Hello Kushal
The 'silent spring' was quite sensational and brought attention to pesticides problem which was lacking appropriate interest. When DDT first appeared, it was actually encouraged by the WHO to be used to extinguish Malaria, but with this book being published in 1962, the harmfulness of pesticides was re-examined, raising issues regarding various factors that these chemicals have been damaging.
Hope more good books could raise awareness to environmental issues!
    Thanks for the report :)
