Open defecation in Nairobi

by Bonface Obuba | 21-12-2018 18:30 recommendations 0

I have been studying in Nairobi for 7 years. it is usual for me to encounter HUMAN POOP under footbridges and on the sides of walkways downtown as I walk to school. It is embarrassing but it is true.

At one incident my friends caught sight of a man openly defecating on the side of a street at night.

Wastewater leaking from a manhole or a sewer pipe and flowing openly on a busy road is a common sight. people get splashed with this offensive raw sewage by traffic. This has happened to me a few times.

Open defecation is despicable and it is an important subject to broach.

Because 6% of Nairobians still practice open defecation, Nairobi has not attained open defecation free (ODF) status, yet.

Something needs to be done.

Lots of feedbacks up here, and it seems like many regional ambassadors also do think that open defection is serious problem to be :(
Concerning infectious diseases caused by human defecation, it is devastating to people living in a small town or city with very few toilets. These toilets especially not equipped with flush toilets are the ones that keep virus or infectious diseases coming from defecation, and people living in the place cannot stop using such toilet since there are not many toilets built up in the town.
I once read a couple of articles about toilets in other country and I was surprised to know that people were carrying plastic bags to throw away their defecation.
Unfortunate and afraid to see people living in dirty sanitation level, I do really hope public toilets equipped with flush toilets or better facility can help people use toilet in better environment!
    Thanks for your report :)

    Hello Bonface
This is an issue that should be managed with more formal methods as this not only brings discomfort but is related to sanitary problems.
Hope the government could set goals upon this issue to get things back to its right order.
Thanks for the report and have a nice day!

    Hi Bonface!

An Early Festive Greetings to You!
Open defecation os a big problem... Especially in third world countries. It's so sad and disturbing that people still openly defecate.

I have the same problem in Cape Town. I have a pathway that I use each time to get to and from work and I tell you it's the saddest thing.

It's gotten so bad, that the city has 24 hour petrol officers just to monitor water canals and parks because it has become a nuisance. ODF standards are solely important, especially for human health and more should be done to counteract this.

Moreover, it shows you that the is a dire need for more public toilets in key areas s for all to use and an awareness campaign to equip people with the dangers of open defecation in terms of health . Only then will we see change.

Thank you souch for your status update.
    Stay blessed
    R.

Nepal has been facing the same problem too but the steps are taken nowdays to declare the zones free defecation by building toilet in every house and at public place.

I feel glad to share you that my district Tanahun is the third district from Nepal to be free of public defecation. The local government has provided funds and materials for the people to build their own toilet so that this problem can be solved.

This is a huge problem of many developing countries, people must be awared and made responsible about this fact and governement must take strict actions to solve this problem as it brings various health hazards and environment pollution.

I hope you write more such reports and hope to see more detail explanations in your report like you could include the steps that should be taken so that people reading the reports can understand the situation there more.

Thank you for the report Bonface explaining the situation in the country.
