"Eco-friendly Fertilizers"

by Hassan Nasir | 01-01-2019 18:15 recommendations 0

Fertilizers are the good source for the development of plants, vegetables, fruits etc. but the economic and social cost of using fertilizer is too high. When we say social cost we mean the cost our environment bears. Big superstores places the bags of fertilizers of various manufacturers however it has been seen that fertilizers irrespective of which brands they are still brings detrimental effects on environment in the form of air pollution, depletion in the nutrients of the soil and many other forms.

Researchers have also found that these artificial fertilizers also causes metal accumulation and chemical runoff in our rivers. While the organic fertilizers have positive impact and are the real means of making agricultural sector resourceful. Organic fertilizers are good as long as it is organic in real means. These days profitable manufacturers concerns only about profit making so it is our duty that we must not be deceived in the name of organic fertilizers and thus inspect thoroughly that whether the fertilizer we are buying is artificial or original.

Fertilizers have three components namely nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium. When buying it labeling must be checked since on fertilizers bag balance of the nutrient in fertilizer is shown with                   10-10-10 or either with 21-7-7 which indicates fertilizer is balanced in terms of nutrients.

Organic versus Synthetic fertilizers

Organic fertilizer contains nitrogen,

Organic fertilizer

Synthetic fertilizer

Organic fertilizer contains nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium

Synthetic fertilizer contains nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium

Nitrogen is released over time

Nitrogen is quick release

Slower release

Quicker release fertilizer

Made with natural ingredients such as blood meal, bone meal, wood ash, peat moss, and manure

It is formed with synthetic materials ammonium sulphate, ammonium phosphate etc.

Used seasonal

Usable anytime

Eco-Friendly Fertilizers

Organic fertilizers are good for green environment. Recycling is something that can bring better results as we can produce fertilizers from recycled products like aquarium water, fireplace ashes and compost.

Aquarium water: We must not through the aquarium water for it produces nitrogen, potassium, ammonia, phosphorous and various other microogranisms. These substance are extremely beneficial for the gardens.

Fireplace ashes: Fireplace ashes consist of potassium and lime. Nutrients in ashes depends totally on their logs. Hardwood logs have higher level of concentration while softwood logs have lower level of concentration. You would be surprised to note that ashes also contains salt that can minimize the pests like snails and slugs.

Compost: it is basically a mixture of different wastage such as food scraps, newspaper and other materials which we disposed of at bin.We can have a good use out of compost because it improves the soil structure hence it can be used in garden and also on the plants of vegetables, herbs, fruits etc.

It can be a great idea to use natural fertilizers for making the garden green with no added chemicals on it and we should start shifting to the natural fertilizers if we really like the concept of Eco-friendly fertilizers.

Hello Hassan, I also thought aquarium water cannot be reused again as suggested in your report.
There is a purifier in fish tank usually but I thought this purifier is essential and must-have item to be placed at, as water of aquarium gets dirty easily by fish branchial respiration and their excretion. However, using aquarium water in this way might trigger people to use purifier less than before, which means it uses less water and electricity :)
Thanks for your report, it was really interesting to know about fertilizer in different ways and means!

    Hello Hassan
Didn't know that aquarium water could be used in such a way!
Technical development has driven the filed to the dominant use of synthetic fertilizers as they are suitable for mass production by standardization but if we think once more about our environment, the transition back to organic methods are truly in need.
Hope more people could participate in this transition!
    Thanks for the report :)

    Hey there Hassan!

Happy New year... 2019 is finally here :D

fertilizers are you to need for the agricultural industry and it is important to note that in the past natural fertilizers were used and a pretty good yield for crops were brought out. Nowadays - as you've mentioned in your report - manufacturers only think about the profit that will be making and not about the mass they should be feeding with a crop yields.

An actual use of compost and fireplace is very common and practical and as you mentioned it does yield Good Results. I am not sure about aquarium water because I've not read up on it but I'll read up on it so that I can understand all the more on what it can does.

Thank you for the interesting and intrinsic report I cannot wait to read more of your report in this new year!

    Yours sincerely
    R.

Chemical fertilizers are harmful to both human health and our environment. Organic fertilizers are of great importance as they are environment friendly too.

Composting, preparation of organic fertilizers like JholMol (It is Nepali name for natural biofertilizer cum biopesticide). I am also planning a project about l organic agriculture, I will keep you updated about that in future reports. Integrated Pest Management is also another way of reducing the use of chemical fertilizers.

Thank you for the report Hassan. Keep writing great reports:) :) :)
Wish you happy and prosperous new year.
