World could feed itself if people ate less meat |

The world could feed its growing population without causing irreparable damage to the environment if people ate less meat, halved food waste and adopted better farming practices, scientists said. But failing to implement even one of those actions could exacerbate climate change, increase pollution and deplete natural resources, making the planet unsafe for humanity, a study by an international team of researchers found. ¡°No single solution is enough to avoid crossing planetary boundaries,¡± said Marco Springmann, the lead author of the study, which he said was the first to take a comprehensive look at the impact global food production has on the planet. ¡°But when the solutions are implemented together, our research indicates that it may be possible to feed the growing population sustainably¡±. The world needs to produce 50 percent more food to support nearly 10 billion people by 2050, the United Nations says. But unless things change, this could increase the impact of food production on the environment by up to 90 percent by 2050 to a level where the planet was no longer a ¡°safe operating space for humanity¡±, according to the study. The prevent that, everyone should switch to diets rich in green vegetables, fruit and nuts and low in red meat and diary products, according to the research, funded by Scandinavian think tank EAT. ¡°We recommend having less than one serving of red meat per (week),¡± Springmann, a senior researcher at the Oxford Martin Programme on the Future of Food, told the Thomson Reuters Foundation by phone. Livestock are responsible for about 14.5 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions, according to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The amount of food thrown away – currently a third of the total – would also need to be halved and best practices to boost yields, recycle fertilizers and improve water management adopted worldwide, the researchers said. ¡°For the average consumer ¡¦ the takeaway message is, change your diet and write to your politicians to implement better regulations,¡± said Springmann. The UN warned the world risked even more extreme weather and loss of species unless rapid unprecedented changes in all aspects of society or were taken to keep the Earth¡¯s temperature rise to 1.5 Celsius. Hello Joon Ho Mentor, Namaste
Eating meat itself is not very good from our health point of view,
It also affecting other people and animal also,
Thank You for your comments.

Hello Deepak, mass production, monoculture and advance of new science technologies have made us fall into swamp that we cannot trace back to how we were living alike before. Accessibility to large amount of meat has made us digest a lot of animals, forgetting and ignoring about their dignity of existence, just killing them whenever we would like to eat and throw away.
Also, poverty issues are still ongoing as you may already know, about 25,000 children die for 'a single day' due to famine and it is so ironical for us to find the statistical number pointing at 2.2 times bigger than the whole population of people on the globe can eat counts for 'the whole amount of food existent in the Earth right now'.
Your report also makes me think about what kind of food digestion habits I have had so far, but hopefully I do not love eating meat or try to eat meat rather than to be a herbivore.
Resulting in greenhouse gas emission along with regional conflict about slash-and-burn field establishment led by meat production, we are facing more dissonance and troublesome future.
Thanks for reminding us of it!

Hello Gyeongrin mentor, Namaste
Now in this modern world we must think of other while we are consuming or using anything,
not only in case of meat, we must think twice while using any natural things,
Thank You for your comment.

Hi Deepak!
14.5% of emissions is way to much contribution from livestock and I agree that something needs to be done to this regard.
An increase in global temperatures is not an option, that too with loss of species. I belive that if the United Nations need to put down incentives that would display the current status quo of the strickened food security and the alternative means to curb the potential crisis that may occur.
Thank you so much for reporting Deepak!
Stay Joyous and live green!

Hello Deepak
In the modern world, it became common that human, a decision making subject. make decisions based on desire and many studies about optimization accepts this proposition.
However if we shift the view from individual selves to a wider concept of the society to see the impacts of our decision to the world, certainly we can see that some adjustment could be done to reduce environment destruction.
The only thing that we need is to pay a little attention on what and how much we eat and to care about the the possible result that it would cause.
Thanks for the report!

Hello Kushal, Hope you are fine.
Yes i had studied your report, you always write very great report
Thank You for your comments :)

I do remember one of the fellow ambassador had previously written a report on how climate change has resulted due to the excessive consumption of the meat.
Although number of vegetarians are increasing but there hasn't been any decrease in the consumption of the meat.
Thank you for the report Deepak dai. Keep writing great reports. It is very much necessary to reduce food waste along with enhancing farmer technologies to solve the problem of food insecurity. I had written a couple of reports on food wastage during festivals and post harvest loss of food, i hope you had studied them too, :) :) :)
