Rags to Riches

by Bam Azores | 24-09-2013 23:08 recommendations 0

During one visit to the Mall, I came across some recycled stuff with the name RAGS2RICHES.  They were interesting stuff like floor rugs, hot plates and even ladies bags made from the tops of the soda  cans.

Did some research and saw that Rags2Riches is a company that makes "eco-ethical fashion and home accessories" from scrap cloth, organic materials and indigenous fabrics.  Women who live in poor communities make the stuff. I remember coming across the same recycled stuff with an NGO that I volunteer in called Enactus Philippines.  One of the colleges was working with Rags2Riches and links them to the poor communities where they teach the women some entrepreneurial projects.

In the beginning the idea was started by women whose families live on top of the largest dumpsite in the Philippines called Payatas. They would search for scrap from the dumpsite and make them into handicrafts. They could help their families from their homes.

But with Rags2Riches the women were taught how to market their products and got help with their designs too.  Rags2 Riches even got some of the best designers to help the community. In four years, Rags2Riches is in 21 communities in Metro Manila and is helping more people to have better lives.
