Water security is the goal of water resources management. For a rapidly growing and urbanizing global population, against a backdrop of increasing climatic and non-climatic uncertainties, it is not possible to 'predict and plan' a single path to water security. To strengthen water security we need to build capacity, adaptability, and resilience for the future planning and management of water resources. Also one way to speed up our efforts is to proactively include the role of women in the conservation efforts. Men and women access, use and manage the resources are different.
The main economic operation in Myanmar is Agriculture and according to the IWMI analysis; agricultural sector provides 22% GDP, employs 60% of the labor force. Finding a balance between use and environmental sustainability is critical for Myanmar¡¯s future. Three areas are particularly urgent: ¡¤ Myanmar¡¯s water bodies are facing increasing pollution from agricultural chemicals (pesticides and fertilizers), industry, mining, urban development and inappropriate disposal of sewage. This is particularly serious in situations where water treatment facilities do not exist and people rely on water from rivers and streams for drinking and domestic use. ¡¤ Deforestation and agricultural expansion, particularly in the uplands, affects runoff, erosion and downstream sediment, resulting in reduced navigability and decreasing storage in dams. Clearing of mangroves in coastal and delta areas adversely impacts fisheries, can lead to increased coastal erosion and may undermine the protection of villages and towns to storm surges and cyclones. ¡¤ Damming of rivers for irrigation and hydropower, well as abstractions for irrigation, fundamentally changes downstream flow patterns and dependent ecosystems, often with serious consequences for fisheries, riverside gardens and other benefits. Good governance and sound management system for tackling the water issue is the necessary for Myanmar¡¯s water security. Moreover, the educated human resources and technical competency, innovation are the significant requirement for managing the water sector in an efficient way. Coordination between government agencies, NGOs, and Communities are also compulsory thing. Reference: www.iwmi.cigar.org / key water issue

Hello Hnin Phyu Sin
Thank you for your report about water security in Myanmar! It is really well structured so I could easily understand the current situation of water resources in Myanmar and possible solutions. In any industries, I think it??s important to find a balance between development and preserving environments. In this way, better governance, educating human resources and technical competency would be very efficient when tackling the problem. Keep up the good work!

Hello Hnin
I do hope that you are fine and doing great with your woks. Thank you for your report about the water security. Your reminds of world water day celebarted on March22. With increasing rate of water pollution and large number of people being deprived from access to pure drinking water, we must focus on the issue of water security too.
Green Cheers from Nepal :)
Keep writing great reports.
We are eager to read more reports from you.
Yours,
Kushal Naharki

Hi Hnin,
This is another great report to read, and not only Nepal, I think there are many countries in the world that are suffering from the water scarcity. We should realize the importance of water as it is the most importance substance in maintaining human life.
Please maintain your interest in water and keep us updated if there is any new!

Hey Hnin,
I concur that there is a dire need for the increased inclusion of women in the water resource protection and management industry. Moreover, I believe that it is not water security was Water Resource Security that should be seen as a goal of water resources management.
I say this because, being a young, female hydrogeologist in the governmental water sector, I have come to realise that too much importance is being given to how water can be secured for the masses instead of thinking of how the water resources, such as aquifers rivers, lakes and dams can be protected so that they may give adequate and clean quality water.
There needs to be a paramount, behavioural shift in the governance and management of theses resources.
Thank you for reporting Hnin!
Sincerely yours,
Rosa.
