When someone asks you the following question, how would you react?:
"Would you protect a bird, or cook and eat it?"
Most of you would immediately respond that you would protect the bird. Even if we don't have a passionate mind for environment conservation, we all have some kind of common sense embedded in ourselves, which makes us to choose the former.
But you have to think about the reason I wrote "Most of you" instead of "all of you." Jonathan Watts, a journalist and the author of the book"When a billion Chinese JUMP", says that Chinese are the people who would prefer to cook the bird than to protect it.
It seems that they view the environment as nothing more than a tool for maintaining life. Of course, it's not. Nature and human, these two are not separate terms. Nature encompasses us all. But China is unaware of that, yet. Regarding nature as something to conquer and make use of has been the typical attitude of the Chinese people. And this is the ultimate key to China's present state of environmental problems.
