Deforestation of Amazon forest in Brazil

by | 30-09-2011 23:24 recommendations 0

Recently, deforestation of Amazon forests brings up lots of controversies and concerns. In Brazil, there are many contributory factors that exacerbate deforestation of Amazon rainforests. Generally, most of deforestation results from actions of poor subsistence cultivators in other countries. However, this does not relates with cases in Brazil since only one-third of recent deforestation can be linked to those cultivators. As a matter of fact, Brazil deforestation is primarily correlated to the economic circumstances. Statistical data from previous decades, such as rocketing rate of deforestation from 1993 to 1998 paralleling Brazil's period of rapid economic growth, prove this. The major activity that is threatening the health of the forest would be clearing for cattle pasture. In a period of 1993 – 1998, tax incentives held by government favored pastureland over natural forests, granting subsidies and tax breaks for forest exploiters. This was a great point to fuel deforestation. Still, there are many other activities that worsen deforestation, such as infrastructure improvements, commercial agriculture and logging. The need to address dangers of those activities and to prevent deforestation gets more urgent nowadays.
