Every year on 15 August, India celebrates its Independence Day with great pomp and show. People tune into patriotic songs, watch nationalistic movies, and one can spot the Indian national flag everywhere. But what follows the next day is that people forget all their patriotism and one can see the national flags shattered so disrespectfully on the ground. Hence, in order to tackle this issue, a 24-year old Engineer named Kritika Saxena invented Indian National Flags which are made from seed paper- the base paper (made from GB waste cotton fiber) has marigold and Basil seeds embedded. So after the event, whenever somebody wants to dispose off the flag, rather than throwing it away, they could sow it in the soil (Burying the flag is in terms with the Flag Code of India, 2002) and get a beautiful plant 🌱. This is basically to reduce plastic/paper garbage. *How to Plant* Soak it in water for 3 days and then plant it in soil. Keep watering it daily. The paper will biodegrade and the seeds might take 10 days to 2 months to germinate, but they will. As they say - All good things require a little patience. Sowing in monsoons with manure is recommended. This is an incredible way to remain patriotic and Environment sensitive.

Hi Ananya,
This is highly impressive, and in my opinion this can contribute significantly in reducing plastics and paper wastes. I hope this technology can be widely practiced in India and other countries can benchmark this technology. Great work.

Hello Ananya
This is such a brilliant idea! I've never came up with the idea to turn a flag into a plant.
This seems to be very helpful in reducing plastic and paper waste.
In this way, people in India will be able to celebrate their Independence day in a eco-friendly way. Thank you for sharing your report on great initiatives!

That's one of the greatest initiatives I have ever heard in reducing plastic/paper garbage.
I feel more countries should adopt this initiative in making commercial flags.
Well written report Ananya Singh!!

Hi Ananya!
Wow, thus is really an innovative idea and it comes at a great time where paper/plastic pollution are at the rail end of our current problem.
I wish someone could do the same for use here, it would be lovely to reduce our little content even if its only on our Freedom Day here in South Africa.
Thank you for this informative report Ananya!
With sincere gratitude,
Rosa
