[Thematic Report] [Environmental Issues in Films and Books]

Movies affect many of us mightily because the combined impact of images, music, dialog, lighting, sound and special effects can cause deep feelings and help us think about our lives. They can help us to better understand our own lives, the lives of those around us, and even the functioning of our society and culture. Today I present you a Bollywood movie which made a history in Bollywood cinema not just by its earnings but also by the powerful message to the society.

"Toilet: Ek Prem Katha" is not a medium film. This satirical comedy encourages efforts to improve sanitation in the community and at least provide basic sanitation to the public.

The film aims to raise awareness of sanitation issues and the importance of building toilets. Although it is a major problem in many parts of underdeveloped and developing countries, it goes largely unnoticed and the film addresses these issues and does not bypass the usual kind of romantic comedy. So far, it's doing a fabulous job of raising awareness among the masses.

The strength of the film lies in how it tries to convey the importance of having women's toilets built, even in the poorest areas. The film, inspired by a true story, strikes a homerun mainly because it really puts the audience in the position of women who don't have access to toilets. In the village, all the inhabitants believe it is impure to have a toilet in the same place where you pray to God or eat your food. So men pee wherever they want outside their home, whereas women have to go to the bathroom only once in the day, just before dawn, and they have to walk for miles to reach a field to make sure that no one sees them while they pee. It is terrifying to think of being robbed of extremely fundamental human rights.

The film is remarkable because it has a major cause.

    Hello Bal krishna

I never knew that there was such issue in India. The fact that women can go to toilet once a day shocks me. People's thought might change by watching this movie that they should install some toilets so people don't have to wonder where to answer the call of nature. Also, installing toilets in public is very important because it leads to sanitation of the public areas, and therefore prevents diseases.
Thank you for the detailed information of the movie!

Very interesting film you have here!
Never have I heard of this movie and still I think the film really does catch our attention! I mean the title is so interesting enough:)

Public sanitation indeed is a serious problem especially in the developing nations it is directly related to public hygiene and environmental pollution as well. I think this movie could show us the importance of public sanitation very effectively.

Thank you for your recommendation and I will definitely watch the movie very soon!
    Green cheers!
