The dangers of the Grand Coral Reef

by | 05-11-2013 21:42 recommendations 0

In the modern society, many issues concerning the environment have been filling the news. However, we usually talk about the human casualties, not saying that they are unimportant, but we do not see any mention or focused news about the casualties to the animals or their habitat. For example, currently, the Grand Coral Reef is in grave danger because of the climate change and other various reasons.

Climate change is the fatalist factor in the decrease of the area of this magnificent natural habitat. Including us, every species is very sensitive to an increase in temperature. The average of the Grand Coral Reef was 26~27 degrees but now it is almost 28. Although this change may seem very miniscule, this small number is quite fatal for sea creatures.

There are other reasons to the corals death that are caused by humans. We tilt the food chain in favor of the predators of corals: The Star of the Sea. These starfishes block the corals from photosynthesizing and thus suffocating them. These starfishes have suddenly become abundant because of the vulgar catching of fishes that help balance the number of this starfish.

To prevent further diminution of this wonderful place and the animals that rely on it, UNESCO put this place on the list of ?Places to be Protected Internationally.? In addition, CNN labeled this place as ?One of the 7 Wonderful Places in the World.? However, even though many efforts was put into the protection of this precious ecosystem, the diminution did not and is not stopping.

Thank you for the article. It is said that aquatic lives are 10 times more sensitive to temperature than plants on the land does. So 1 degree is quite serious number for the coral reefs.
