Valentine’s day is an occasion celebrated all across the world and is known to be a dedicated to love and different ways to express it. People often mark this day by getting a present for their loved ones to indicate how much they love them. The list starts from chocolates, bouquets and it goes on endlessly.
But before buying a romantic bouquet, think about the carbon footprint we are causing. The environmental impact of growing flowers, shipping them and then trashing them in less than a week is enormous, especially around Valentine’s Day. Majority of flowers worldwide are grown in the States and flown all across the world. While these flowers are shipped on regular passenger planes most of the year, weeks before the start of February there is a huge increase in the number of flights dedicated solely to ship flowers - roughly 30 cargo flights fly from Miami to UAE every day in the three weeks prior to the celebration. In other words, every rose, lily or sunflower you buy this Valentine’s Day has a significant carbon footprint. In addition, what happens once these flowers are gifted? They are simply thrown away. This day is an incredible wasteful celebration in terms of its environmental impact. For all the Valentine’s Days to come, I’d just like to make a small suggestion. Instead of treading the typical path and gifting someone flowers, think twice about the environment and reduce the amount you buy. This way you can even
consider switching to another means of expressing love. Showcase your love by doing something personal for your loved ones. Up cycle — old materials such as cans, glass bottles, etc. can be made new and gifted with a sweet message- Sharing a meal, Sharing your love — reduce consumption of goods and share a meal with a close one. This Valentine I celebrated the day not only with my family but also with people who are passionate about sustainable living and gardening. I attended Green UAE programme where in I met people from different background and culture and learnt the tips to grow plants different ways in an environment friendly way. I was really impressed the way they explained the method to grow hydroponic plants without using any soil or any chemical. In composting stall I found plants grown in a plastic bottles and plastic milk cans. I found this one of the best ways to recycle your plastic waste. At the end I got my valentine gifts that was home-made composting kit and plants grown in a plastic bottle. I gifted few marigold saplings to my friends as a valentine gift, which they can look after for weeks to see their final product and it will be enjoyable to see their gifts growing instead of diminishing in the garbage bin. I could not have spent my Valentine Day better than this. |

I think it's really awesome how you celebrated the day in such a way and it's a great idea to give your loved ones a gift that is loving to the environment as well:)

You have suggested an alternative to trash-full Valentine's day that only humans could be happy of.
