Annual journey with Greeenpeace

by Chaehyun Park | 20-06-2020 03:22 recommendations 0

Greenpeace is a global environment protect organization. Greenpeace is active as much as people who are not such an environment considerer the would have heard of it once. Thus I came up with Greenpeace when hearing the thematic topic of this month. Supporting Greenpeace, the busiest year for Greenpeace's marine protect was 2019 of my sight. So I learned to write this report to introduce you about what Greenpeace did for marine in the prior year.

April 2019

The historic project starts. Greenpeace had the goal, making the 30% of the ocean a conserved area. If attaining it or not depends on what agreement BBNJ(Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction) draws. It will decide the goal is going to be easy or impossible to achieve. Greenpeace tried to persuade the countries participating BBNJ through Large-scale projects that can have an impact around the world wide. So what's created is the Pole to Pole Expedition. Greenpeace prepared a massive expedition from the North Pole through the Atlantic Ocean to the South Pole for a year within its two ships, the Esperanza and the Attic Sunrise.

Plus, Greenpeace in Korea performed a campaign on the purpose of celebrating the world penguin day(25th April) in front of the Sejong cultural center.

25th April

August 2019

Greenpeace presented '30X30 A BLUEPRINT FOR OCEAN PROTECTION' report to reach out to the goal, making the 30% of the ocean a conserved area. Nationally, Greenpeace Korea formed up 'Ocean defender' for the Korea government to awake Greenpeace's international effort.

October 2019

Pole to Pole Expedition arrived at the Atlantic Ocean. It draws global attention and made people wonder the ship of Greenpeace would succeed in reaching to South pole. And Greenpeace released another report about the impact of overfishing in the Southwest Atlantic ocean.

Moreover, the smart organization used the effect of a celebrity. Javier Bardem, a Spanish actor, lifted a picket saying 'PROTECT THE OCEAN' in front of a big bulletin advertisement telling the same word in New York Timesquare. Its result was a win-win for both Greenpeace and Javier Bardem. Greenpeace could raise citizen's environmental awareness, plus Javier Bardem got more praise and fame from the public.

The iconic movement was in Busan, Korea, too. Citizens gathered at Haeundae beach to do body language performance with sand-drawing. Sand-drawing has the advantage of being eco-friendly because it naturally disappears over time.

November 2019

Do you know Pengsoo? Pengsoo is a penguin character from EBS, an education channel in Korea. Pengsoo was popular in youtube enough for BTS to watch him. Greenpeace made another penguin character, Ttogi, like Pengsoo, but gives environmental information of antarctic. Ttogi is participating in all kinds of campaigns of Greenpeace. You can see Ttogi in the last picture, Busan campaign!

You know what? The romance rumor between Pengsoo and Ttogi had sparked, but they denied.

January 2020

The Pole to Pole Expedition had finally arrived at the final spot, antarctic! It was such a meaningful event on the marine campaigns. People got shocked freshly and built a mind to live more eco-friendly.

February 2020

Greenpeace exposed scientific research at that time, not a report. It's about the diminishing of Pygoscelis antarcticus, a species of penguins by 70,000 pairs off because of the environmental pollution. It directly has linked to biodiversity. Greenpeace made an effort to warn the public aware. This research was useful material as an environment article in Korea.

There is a symbolic place where Koreans have been protesting when they aware of some injustice or inequity. It's Gwanghwamun. Greenpeace used the property of Gwanghwamun, which can effectively get people's attention. They exhibited ice cubes designed penguin shapes. People realized the seriousness of biodiversity seeing the cubes melting.

Children all around the world must have seen the animation of Aardman Studio. Clay texture of the animation is the main feature of Aardman Studio. You can imagine Wallace and Gromit or Pingu. Greenpeace collaborated with Aardman Studio. They made an animated movie, Turtle Journey. This movie shows the devastated ocean through the turtle family. David Harbour and Olivia Colman gave their voice on it. I recommend this passing June, including World Oceans Day.

I thought I knew that Greenpeace is the most active environmental protection organization among I've ever seen. It was the reason why I decided to support them. However, scanning through Greenpeace's movements from April to April, I realized It's not all I knew. Greenpeace was beyond my imagination. I was shocked by the scale and quality of their campaign. They had no hesitation in spending money and resources to contribute to the environment. Sponsoring Greenpeace would be more effective than for a person to reduce disposable straws for the environment. Also, I think it is another advantage of Greenpeace as a private organization, that I can see transparently how my money spends. Why don't you join the sponsorship for a better world?

Hi Chaehyun Park, this is a mentor, Sang Su Lee.

What a nice summary with nice pictures of the annual Greenpeace's activities. I know Pengsoo. He is very famous by telling quite honestly about the social problems. It makes me feel as if I am drinking sprite... kkk

I was glad that there is such an organization that works arduously to protect the environment. Thank you for introducing this organization. Thanks to such organization, the environment can stay healthy!

    Green Cheers!

Hello Chaehyun Park this is mentor Taehyun!

Thank you for your detailed explanation of Greenpeace's annual activities! It was really interesting the whole time I read it! Especially, Greenpeace's bold plan to turn 30 percent of the ocean into a protected area is a great example of what Greenpeace is doing, something that it can't do unless it's a large, non-profit environmental group. It's really cool. That's why environmental pollution is delayed a little bit, right?

    Thank you for the report!

    Green cheers!
