Sustainable Development Goals: Targets, Achievements, Strategies and Future Strategies in context of Nepal

Sustainable Development Goals 01

No poverty

This goal comes under Economic pillar of Sustainable Development Goals. I will be addressing about it's target; End Poverty in all its forms everywhere.
Poverty is generally a situation when a person doesn't have resource to fulfill even there basic needs. Poverty isn't only related to monetary aspects. It can be situational poverty, relative poverty, absolute poverty, cultural poverty and many other forms.

Some forms of poverty in brief are:
1. Absolute poverty: it's situation when a person can't meet his/her own basic needs
2. Relative poverty: it's a situation when a person 'A' though can fulfill it's basic needs but has a less income or resources than person 'B', then person 'A' is said to be in relative poverty to person 'B'.
3. Situational poverty: A person with all kinds of resources suddenly become victim of natural disasters and loses everything, then he/she is in the state of situational poverty
4. Generational poverty: it's related to inheritance of property. Example, if a person 'X' has an ancestor with lots of property then it will be inherited to him/her. However, if a person B has ancestor with no much property then he/she is said to be in generational poverty.
5. Cultural poverty: it's a form when there's no proper social norms and values in the society.

In context of Nepal, people under Rupees. 19,601 /annum are considered to be in poverty. It's determine on the basis of per capita income of the country. Since last 25 years, the rate of poverty line has decreased much in Nepal. Being a part of United Nations and country engaged in achieving sustainable development goals by 2030; Nepal is also working to make poverty zero by 2030. So, to meet this goals, various indicators have been set. Sinduplanchowk, Tanahun, Gulmi are some districts in Nepal which were severely hit by disastrous earthquake and other calamities. Huge loss of lives and properties were recorded. However, government and various organizations managed to help them with various relief fund and other kinds of support.

There are several challenges and weakness for developing countries like Nepal to achieve this goal. Some are enlisted below:
1. Unemployment rate in Nepal is (1-4)% (2019 statistics)
2. Complex bureaucracy and political instability
3. Corruption and political shutdown
4. Large population in Nepal is of female. However, women are more likely poor than male since they are paid less even for the same work as male.

Nepal has certain strengths that helps in acheiving goals. Some strengths and activities by Nepal for SDG 01 are,
1. Tourism has greatly supporrted Nepalese economy. Visit Nepal 2020 was also supposed to be happened. However, due to Covid-19 crisis, it got stopped.
2. Insurance, grants and loan provision are made to the farmers.
3. Relief fund has been provided to affected communities by natural disasters. However, this isn't a permanent solution.
4. Various programmes to reduce unemployment have been carried out like karnali employment program.
5. Prime Minister Employment Programme, government initiative to guarantee minimum days of paid employment to citizens.
6. Old age and widow allowance provision is also conducted.

In the situation of Covid19, government has worked to provide some relief fund to the underprivileged society. In addition to this, interests for the loans taken by farmers is also set free. However, being a developing country and because of political instability, the expectations of citizen isn't met.

Moreover, some strategies made to end poverty are:
1. Youth self employment program supported by providing self employment fund
2. Integrated community development projects
3. Agricultural intensification along with industrial expansion
4. Economic reforms programs such as trade and commerce
5. Highlight on 3 I's for growth- Investment, Infrastructure, and Inclusion

The another most important thing in regard to economy is; 1 in 2 family runs from remittance in Nepal. So, remittance has been the support for Nepalese family.  Government has been working for the employment generation programme in Nepal itself.

Nobody can do everything but everybody can do something. So, each and every individual support from own level at the sector of; housing, transportation, child care, education, jobs and wages, social safety net, financial literacy with leadership equity.

The poster also reflects about Nepalese status in context of SDG 01. This poster was prepared by myself along with my partners miss Anisha Gautam and Mr. Ashwini Kumar Jha. I included some of the points here, if you want to know more in details in any specific criteria, you can let me know.

Last but not the least, Poverty is not an accident like slavery and apartheid but is man made like Nelson Mandela had said. So, human can end it if they really desire to work to end it.

Hi Asmita Gaire, this is a mentor, Sang Su Lee.

It is so sad and unfortunate that even though it is possible that all resources are distributed equally to humans, the nature of humans and the logic of capitalism never allow this to be happened. Therefore, it is really imperative to be benevolent and altruistic. The one property that the only humans, not animals, have is the ability to share food even though they are hungry. Animals never do this...

Thank you for sharing one of SDG goals. It was interesting.

    Green cheers.

Hello Asmita Gaire, this is mentor Taehyun!

Congratulations on starting to write the first article in the Sustainable Development Series! I'll look forward to your great articles. This article covered poverty. I think it's a very serious topic and one of the difficult topics to solve in sustainable development goals. It's known that a country that was once impoverished by various causes, such as national problems and natural disasters, is really hard to return to its original state. However, as you said, I think we can solve the problem by applying the appropriate policy for each country's situation. It's very hopeful. I look forward to the next article!

    Thank you for the report!

    Green cheers!
