Impact of Covid-19 lockdown in Agriculture education in Nepal: An online survey

by Sandhya Adhikari | 08-08-2020 16:04 recommendations 0

Covid-19, this pandemic has not only brought chaos on the lifestyle of people disturbed global economy, halted prosperity of mankind but also has created negative impact on education system mostly of developing nation where there is no rational and equal distribution of internet access. There used to be the time when a digital learning was only meant to be for higher level student. But nowadays the platform such as Zoom, Google Meet has became one of the most used platform for distant learning. The use of virtual online platform has both cons and pros, in the context of developing nations where there is no any rational distribution of internet, the student of that areas are mostly affected. Not only others let me share my own experience that currently i am at village where there is nt a equal distribution of internet access but lucky me i have good access , electricity problem is major due to various region, monsoon rain has also disturbed electricity circulation and our college has decided to take online which is good for those who are access to resources alternatives to the problems but what about those who dont have access?? Is it feasible for them ?? Being a class representative of my class i found that nearly 50% students are nt attending college. This seems so worst situation as half of the student are not getting access, and it has been 4 month. We are so stunned to share that our 6 month semester has been extended.

So with a motive to learn students attributes, their response about the impact that COVID -19 has created on the agriculture education we had done an online survey of 180 respondent all across the country and recorded their response. And these research paper had been published in one of the most reputed journal pedagogical Research. This paper is also the collaboration of 3 institute of Agriculture collage of Nepal. I am very glad to share with you all about our works, addition to this i am much more grateful toward my dear friend Sandesh Thapa, who is also the active member of Tunza Eco Generation, also helped me alot in my environmental campaigns.

As per our research we didn't find lockdown beneficial to many of the students.  This survey shows that maximum respondent, around 52% of them found lockdown beneficial in the sense that it has helped to neutralize the gravity of viral infection and 48% of them doesn¡¯t found it beneficial as their educational schedule has been halted. The practical education of a student is disturbed due to lockdown and now they are utilizing this period involving in online courses, training, and webinars. Many of them couldn¡¯t have access to the internet to catch the session, thus the government should initiate policy in education through a long term perspective so that no pandemic could interfere with the educational institution in digital world. most of them had reported having a negative impact on education (82%) and no idea (6.7%) and 11.3% didn¡¯t found a negative impact on education respectively . However, much of the respondents claimed that the practical education of students is disturbed (82%), 5.3% have no idea about this and 12.7% of the respondents think that there¡¯s no effect on practical education due to lockdown.
Thus our research focused on the perspective of students on the impact caused by Covid 19 on the agriculture education of Nepal, And we found that this pandemic has caused enormous impact on the practical education of the students. An initiation should be set up by the government for the long term prosperity of quality digital inclusive education in Nepal so in future no any pandemic could create such a drastic impact.

Hi Sandhya Adhikari, this is a mentor, Sang Su Lee.

I heard that COVID-19 is bringing disparity in the quality of education depending on the classes of living. Those who can access to the education via computers and internet will thrive in this situation, but those who cannot will not. I hope this problem will be solved soon...

Thank you for writing this article.

    Green cheers~

Hello Sandhya Adhikari, this is mentor Taehyun!

Thank you for organizing various opinions about the Corona virus! Has the virus ever caused the entire human race to suffer and be isolated? I think it's an unprecedented situation. Especially since it's popular not only in one region, but around the world, people all over the world can relate to it, and I think this opportunity is very meaningful. Of course, there are many people who think negatively about isolation caused by coronavirus, but I think it is necessary for prevention and above all, for sustainable development! Let's cheer up a little more.

    Thank you for the report!

    Green cheers!
