Sustainable Development Goals: Targets, Achievements, Strategies and Future Strategies in context of Nepal

Sustainable Development Goals 05

Gender Equality

This goal comes under Equity pillar of Sustainable Development Goals. I will be addressing about achieving gender equality and empowering all women and girls.

The three targets being focussed are:
1. End discrimination against all women and girls
2. Eliminate Violence and all harmful practices against all women and girls
3. Ensure women's participation and leadership in decision making

In context of Nepal, gender inequality index shows, 0.497 as by 2015 that is targeted to decrease to 0.05 by 2030. Similarly, global gender gaps index of Nepal is 0 .7. Nepal ranked 105th among 149 countries in 2015. This is not a good status. gender empowerment measurement is 0.57 as by 2015, andnus targeted to increase to 0.69 to 2030.
In child marriage context, Nepal ranked 3rd position in South Asia with 29% marrying before 18 years. In addition to this, participation of women in civil services is 23% (According to NPC, 2017). The seats available in national parliament is 32.73% in 2019 whuchxh was 29.6% in 2017.

This shows, Nepal status in context of gender equality by now is very poor however efforts are being made to uproot this deeply rooted problem on gender inequality.

Towards acheiving this goal, certain activities that government has proposed and believe it to be their strengths are:
1. A National Strategy 2072 BS to end child marriage. Government has enforced this strategy in collaboration with UN organ that is UNICEF. Child marriage is punishable.
2. Witchcraft allegation bull passed in 2016, since many women were victim of this social and cultural harmful practices
3. 33% seats for women in National parliament is allocated
4. Quotas system for women is being arranged
5. Increment of women community leaders, environmentalists, politicians, business owners, etc
6. Governmental and non governmental organizations, national and international organization, local social organizatios are working to empower women and eliminate violence.
7. Provision of children citizenship through mothers is being legalized
8. Women are also regarded with equal rights for their maternal inherited properties

However, still some weakness are there which are quite difficult to make bow down instantly. They are:
1. Patriarchal society still do exist
2. Social and cultural barriers have always hindered women empowerment
3. Both women and men follows these cheap societal attitudes
4. Empowerment of women is bounded with Hindu social structure
5. More unpaid care work. Most of the women are housewife. They work twice much as the men do. However, there work is not regarded and are not offered with salaries also
6. Inadequate laws to deal with sexual offenses and other violences

Every drawbacks have some possibilities as listed below:
1. Various groups like Ama Samuha (Women club) has been established for the rights of women for the voice of women.
2. Quotas system has been established for women and have also focussed disadvantaged group.
3. Empowerment of women is being focussed, and women leaders are empowered for the fight against social injustices and I'll practices.

Strict laws of punishment, law enforcement, regular monitoring and reporting mechanisms must be regulated from government bodies. Social service organizations like Maiti Nepal and many others also have to be a responsible factor for mitigating gender inequality by empowering marginalized women by education, training and employment.

Together we can create a world with dignity, health and opportunity for all. Gender inequality has deeply been rooted with a very ancient history. So, it isn't easy to uproot it at a time. It takes time but we definitely can uproot it. For this, you; me and everyone of us has to respect women and work and praise them for empowerment. Let's do it.

Hi Asmita Gaire, this is a mentor, Sang Su Lee.

Indeed a gender inequality is a serious problem all over the world. Although the world is heading toward complete gender inequality, its speed is not that fast. However, I really hope that gender equality is achieved in an appropriate manner. Some women are just calling for equality, not doing anything that men do. For example, they are crying for the same payments, but they do not perform the same work.

    Green cheers.

Hello Asmita Gaire, this is mentor Taehyun!

I'm reading the article on the sustainable development series. This time, it's an article about gender equality! The problem of gender equality is still not solved in many countries. It's mostly because of the cultural or social atmosphere, and for sustainable development, for the future, we need to have doubts about what we're used to, what we think is natural.

    Thank you for the report!

    Green cheers!
