When something that is related to environment was said, I was wondering what to write. Since environment is vast and I had lots of things to dedicate for environment. However, I tried writing on something that is highly relevant at this moment. Of course, it's CoVid 19, human and environment.
By this time, you must have heard about masks from abaca and banana fibre. Yes, Philippines have become successful in making masks from banana-tree species that help to cut CoVid plastic waste. Interestingly, the fibre from banana tree can replace plastics in millions. The mask that we use these days is also one of the major polluter since we use and throw it in the bin since it can't be reused. Covid19 in one hand has helped to cut down pollution from vehicles and other sources, while in the other hand, there are innumerable impact on the environment related to use of plastic around the world. Online delivery packaging is increasing. The rate of single use plastic consumption has increased. The use of personal protective equipment and mask is increasing. These products can't be reused and in return had brought immense bad consequences in the environment. Efforts are being made for the preparation of disposable masks and equipment. However, when it comes about CoVid 19, people don't want to take risk and fear if the new product isn't safe enough. Like, there's is a saying, where there is a will, there is a way. And nature has solution to every problem around us. We just have to dig into it and find a treasure hidden in nature. So, in this regard Philippines did a preliminary study and found abaca paper to be more water resistant in comparison to a commercial N-95 mask and pore size is also in the range to filter hazardous particles. Abaca fibre is extracted from abaca plant which is a close relative of the banana plant. The demand for abaca fibre is increasing since it helps in producing reusable and safe medical garments for healthcare professionals. We are very uncertain on when pandemic starts and when will it end. But we are certain on how our earth could be like in the future. So, awareness among consumers must be increased when it comes to take care of the environment. Source: https://www.textiletoday.com.bd/philippines-makes-face-mask-abaca-paper-banana-fiber/ |

Hi Asmita Gaire, this is a mentor, Sang Su Lee.
It is so good to hear that masks can be made not from plastics but from some natural resources that can be decomposed after being dispensed when they are used completely. Indeed, so many people are wearing plastic masks and this is giving such a huge pressure to the environmental health. Therefore, it is very positive that such replacement is developed.
Green cheers~!

Hello Asmita Gaire, this is mentor Taehyun!
There was another way to replace the mask in nature! I've never heard of the name "Abaca plant" and it's amazing that a fairly high level of filtering can replace an N95 mask! If so many filtered porous materials are found in nature, disposable masks will prevent the environment from being destroyed!
Thank you for the report!
Green cheers!
