Sustainable Development Goals: Targets, Achievements, Strategies and Future Strategies in context of Nepal

Sustainable Development Goals 07

Affordable and Clean Energy

This goal comes under Environment pillar of Sustainable Development Goals. I will be addressing about Ensuring access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all.

Our dependence on fossil fuel is increasing day by day. But the fact is, we must not be attracted too much on it. They are just two or three days gift and we must be inclined on affordable, reliable and sustainable energy.

Certain indicators to achieve this goal in Nepal are:
1. To increase the use of LPG by 39% which is indicated by emission of less carbon in the atmosphere
2. To increase the production of electricity by 15,000 MW by constructing power plant and completing ongoing projects
3. Doubling the share of renewable energy in global energy net
4. To increase electricity access by 99% taking in consideration of demand and supply of consumers
5. To increase use of electric vehicle by 60% by increasing consumption

So, can Nepal achieve this target?
Nepal has capacity of 3.387 MWh per metre square wind energy, 42,0000 megha watt capacity of hydropower energy, 21,000 MW capacity of solar energy and potential of 1.9 million of bio gas plant. We are also rich in water resources.

However, what hinders the target are:
Corrupted employee, insufficient investment, overlooking of project and missing the target, and lack of technologies.

However, in mid term evaluation, it was reported energy production being increased by 40% since 2005, increased electricity consumption by 9% per year and increased in the production of electricity to 1006 MW and access of electricity is 74%.

We are already in 2020, but we are far away from target. For this, proper strategies for future is must. The strategy can be to reduce tax 150% in private electric vehicles affordable for all. Government should focus on investment and budget allocation of the project. Similarly, upgrade in the technology is must. It means replacing non renewable resources by renewable one and renewable into sustainable one. And the major strategy would be to make energy self sufficient.

We are wasting energy every day and every night. So, what if we utilize this energy for other purpose? What if we become more conscious and want if we utilize resources properly?

If we do so, then definitely our activities for achieving these goals would come to reality.

  • Taehyun Mentor says :
Hello Asmita Gaire, this is mentor Taehyun!

I'm reading the series on sustainable development! This is about energy. The theme of sustainable energy, eco-friendly energy is very hot around the world, right? In fact, what we need to think about is not blindly introducing eco-friendly energy without considering regional conditions, but what kind of eco-friendly energy is appropriate for local situations. For example, we need to determine whether there is a lot of wind in the area, or whether there is enough sunlight.

    Thank you for the report!

    Green cheers!
