(thematic report) Problem and Solving- microplastic |

Microplastic is one of the biggest villains in the environment. They are produced from oil or natural gas (non-renewable natural resources). Every day we consume around 1.5 billion plastic bags around the world. Few are even recycled. Mostly, after being used, usually, for a single time, they tend to be dropped wrongly and take about 450 years to decompose. In that time, pollution increases, it can end up in forests, rivers, and oceans, where they are swallowed by animals that die suffocated or trapped in them. In 2011 many countries like Italy banned the use of plastic bags, only the biodegradable one is allowed. The problem is that we are still consuming a lot of plastic in situations that could easily be replaced by another eco-friendly packing. Plastic is still killing about 100,000 marine animals every year. According to projections made by specialists, if we continue to use the quantity of plastic as we are currently doing, in 2050 there will be more garbage than fish in the ocean. During my research I could find a website listing 10 products that could replace plastic. 1- fungus and other microbes 2- Straws made with avocado seed 3- mycelium, the structure of the vegetative root of a fungus 4- Tomato peel 5- Banana leaves If you want to check the others you can access it here https://incrivel.club/inspiracion-consejos/10-materiales-biodegradables-y-alternativos-que-podrian-sustituir-el-plastico-1002160/ References: https://catracalivre.com.br/cidadania/plastico-mata-animais-marinhos/ https://incrivel.club/inspiracion-consejos/10-materiales-biodegradables-y-alternativos-que-podrian-sustituir-el-plastico-1002160/ https://www12.senado.leg.br/noticias/materias/2016/04/19/sacola-plastica-e-uma-das-maiores-vilas-do-meio-ambiente

Hi Fernanda pioli macedo, this is a mentor, Sang Su Lee.
Although whether microplastic is damaging humans is not discovered yet, it is vivid that it harms the marine environment and therefore it is imperative to combat this problem. Thank you for writing about this issue.

Hello, this is mentor Taehyun!
Materials to replace plastics are constantly being developed, but what they all have in common is that they don't follow the convenience of conventional plastics. What we need is a little bit of discomfort.
Thank you for the report!
Green cheers!
