Research paper published on Documentation on ITK on Pest Management

by Kushal Naharki | 02-09-2020 09:53 recommendations 0

Pesticides are being heavily used in pest management in agriculture which have residues, cause harm to the beneficial insect within soil and have health impacts on living organism. Pesticidides have been seriously affecting natural resources, habitat and biodiversity. Indigenous technical knowledge are prevalent in our societies which are eco friendly and sustainable. With the increase of the modern technologies and knowledge, we have lost our traditional technical knowledge. They are geting lost from our societies due to the lack of documentation and transfer to the next generation. With the aim to document the indigenous technical knowledge used in the pest management In the mid western hills of Nepal, a survey was conducted among the 75 indigenious people of tanahun, lamjung and kaski district of Nepal.

Being the main author of the paper, i feel glad to share you all that my research paper has been published in the first issue of 18th volume of Saarc Journal of Agriculture. This journal is published by SAARC Agriculture Center

Title of the article: DOCUMENTATION OF INDIGENOUS TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE AND THEIR APPLICATION IN PEST MANAGEMENT IN WESTERN MID HILL OF NEPAL

Abstract of my Article:

Indigenous technical knowledge (ITK) are based on the experiences of the local people being passed on from one generation to next and has been used for management of pest since ancient times. A study was conducted to collect and document the ITK and their application in pest management from indigenous communities in western mid hill of Nepal. A total sample size of seventy-five respondents from the indigenous communities of Magar, Gurung, and Newar in Tanahun, Lamjung and Kaski districts of Nepal were interviewed with a semi structured questionnaire. The study revealed that subsistence farmers and semi commercial farmers usually made the most use of ITK while commercial farmers rarely used such indigenous knowledge. Use of ITK was highest (85%) by the subsistence farmers, followed by semi-commercial farmers (60%), and lowest (10%) by commercial farmers in pest management. The transfer of ITK was mostly found to be through past generations. The indigenous technological knowledge being applied in pest management should be documented, promoted, and encouraged in combination with scientific knowledge among the farming communities.

    Hello Kushal!
    It's your SJ mentor.
    Congratulations publishing your first paper!!
Actually there were many indigenous technical knowledge in Korea too.
While being modernized this valuable technologies are replaced to chemical pesticides.
Chemical based pesticides include toxic agents such as Phorate.
To save our land and to get organic food, Korean farmers restored indigenous technical knowledge in agriculture.
Farmers used ducks to catch worms while growing rice . Also using freshwater snail to prevent weeds.
I hope that ITK would spread out to all farmers in Nepal.
Thank you for sharing us such a wonderful article.
    Green cheers!

    Hello Kushal!
This is your mentor WooJoo :)
Congratulations for your new article! Also, thank you for sharing it with us.
I can feel that you put so much effort to document and protect the traditional technical knowledge. Modern technology might be more effective and lucrative, but since agriculture has a close relationship with nature and environment, I think we should consider it more carefully.
After reading your report, I felt curious about what were the consequences of using pesticides, and in which ways did they change the ecosystem or habitat. It would be great if you could share some specific examples with us!
Again, thank you for the great article, Kushal!
    Nice job!
