Lead Pollution in Flint, Michigan in 2020

by Shreya Chaudhuri | 06-09-2020 12:07 recommendations 0

Flint, Michigan in America had heavy levels of lead in their drinking water since 2014. It has been almost seven years, but the problem still continues. Lead pollution is extremely damaging for both the environment and the human health; it inhibits plant germination and is a neurotoxin, which leads to developmental disorders in young children. So, this is a serious environmental problem that must be resolved.

Flint is an iconic example of climate injustice/ environmental rascism. It is a predominantly African-American region that has been underfunded and not supported appropriately for decades. Unfortunately, this has determined the way the lead pollution problem arose and was treated. Because it is not an affluent area, the lead pipes, which are discontinued in the majority of the USA, were used until recently.

The lead pipes caused the buildup of high concentrations of lead in their water. Due to the lack of lead detection tools and water purification installments, the temporary solution to the problem was water bottles, which leads to more plastic pollution in the oceans. Although a few pipes were switched, not all of them were. Flint still does not have access to clean drinking water. Under the Trump administration, this problem has been sidelined and avoided, but this cannot continue. The citizens of Flint MI deserve the basic human right of access to clean water, and it is up to us to amplify their voice and raise attention to it.

    Greetings Shreya!
    It's your SJ mentor.

Thank you for sharing your precious report regarding Lead Pollution.
As you mentioned, lead ions can be eluted from lead pipe and can be mixed as tap water.
I wish all pipes can be changed to safer one such as PVC.
And residents in Flint live on safe environment.

    Best regards,
    SJ mentor.
