Florida's Coral Reefs

by Shreya Chaudhuri | 06-09-2020 14:09 recommendations 0

Coral reefs are some of the most beautiful creatures in the world. They hold an abundance of marine organisms from the tiniest microalgae to the largest parrotfish. To humans, coral reefs sustain the coastal economy.

Yet, in Florida, the coral reefs are currently disappearing. This is largely attributed to climate change. Since Florida is near the equator which heats up faster than the rest of the world from global warming, the coral reefs suffer the consequences of scorching oceans. This causes coral bleaching, which is the number one reason for disappearing coral reefs.

Coral bleaching is also indirectly causes by human activities. Florida, a tourist economy, welcomes ocean-related activities to the tourists. However, they are typically not educated on behavior that can potentially harm the coral reefs. For instance, using sunscreen that contains oxybenzone leads to coral bleaching. Perhaps the only solution in this situation is education. Please remember to read up on coral safety before entering the oceans.

    Greetings Shreya!
    It's your SJ mentor.

Thank you for sharing your report about coral reefs.
On a global level coral reefs are fading away due to global warming.
Tuvalu is the most representative place such phenomenon ongoing.
Chemical components as like oxybenzone can also damage the reefs.
Appropriate actions involving education is truly needed to protect the coral reefs.

    Best regards,
    SJ mentor.

Hello Shreya, this is your mentor WooJoo :)
I guess this is your first thematic report! :D Good job
The disappearance, or extinction of coral reefs is happening all around the world.
I've read a Korean article which states that researchers have found a way to artificially proliferate coral by sexual reproduction, but still more studies are necessary.
Thank you for sharing your first thematic report, and keep working hard.

    Best regards,
