Training On Offseason Vegetable Cultivation

by Sagar Koirala | 09-10-2020 14:54 recommendations 0

Some vegetables grow in the summer season only and some grow in winter season only. They do not grow in all seasons. If we want to grow all kinds of vegetables in all seasons, we have to cultivate vegetables by applying artificial technology in farming. The farming of all kinds of vegetables in all seasons by applying artificial technology is called off-season vegetable farming.

On October 2, IAAS Nepal ERC LC along with Tunza Eco- Generation conducted Training on Offseason Vegetable Cultivation. The training was facilitated by Miss Sanjana Thakur , MSc Ag (Horticulture). Around 50 partcipants from various walks of like participated in the training. I got the privilage to represent Tunza as co-organizer for the event. I am thankful to the participants for making it interactive session.

Miss Thakur focused on various methods of off-season vegetable Farming.

Methods of off-season vegetable farming

a. Vegetable Farming in Plastic Sheds/huts
A kind of plastic shed or hut is made in the vegetable farm for producing vegetables inside it. All the agricultural activities are carried out inside such buds like digging, making ridge, transplanting seedlings and heaping sol around the plants.
This technique is applied in the high hilly region in the winter seaso0 to produce vegetables. It is useful even in the other places in the rainy season for producing vegetables like tomato, brinjal, chili, etc.

b.Vegetable Farming in Plastic Tunnel
A tunnel is prepared by using a plastic sheet of 5m in breadth and 20m or more in length and locally available materials like bamboo, wood, rod, and rope. The plants or vegetables can grow easily and within a short period of time in such tunnels. We can keep or remove the tunnels according to our needs.

c. Use of Plastic Bags
Sometimes the plastic bags are used for germinating and growing seedlings as it takes a long time for them to grow in the farmlands. The seeds are sown in the plastic bags or pouches by putting the mixture of organic manure and soil in the right proportion.Such bags or pouches are kept inside the plastic tunnel. It helps in growing seedlings and transplanting them in the farmland even in the cold season.

d. Selection of Suitable Sites
There are different types of climate in the different regions of our country. Some off-season vegetables of a region may be seasonal for another region. Radish, cauliflower, cabbage, and Raayo are grown in the months of Chaitra or Baishakh in the high hilly regions as seasonal vegetables whereas these vegetables in these months are off-season for the basins and Terai region. These vegetables are grown in the months of Aswin or Kartik and harvested in the months of Poush or Margin basins and the Terai region.

e. Selection of Appropriate Species
The agriculture experts have developed various species of vegetables to be produced in season or off-season. To meet the demand of the market and the consumers, the experts have developed such new species that can yield products in a shorter span or can take time more than usual.

    Hello Sagar!
    It's your SJ mentor.

Thank you for sharing such informative knowledge with us.
In Korea Offseason Vegetable Cultivation is so much going on.
It can bring more economic compensation to farmers.
But in most cases offseason vegetable cultivation demands a lot of Plastics.
We must take effort to use less amount of plastics while growing crops.

    Sincerley,
    SJ mentor.

    Hello Sagar,
    this is your mentor WooJoo.

Thank you for sharing your wonderful experience with us.
I have little knowledge of farming, so the concept of off-season vegetable farming was very new to me.
But thanks to your kind explanation I got to know its meaning and some helpful methods.
By being able to farm and grow vegetables in all seasons, we could prevent lack of food in the future when the climate would have changed a lot.
Also, using recycled plastics would be nice but I'm curious if there's no risk in using plastics, since they can degrade and leave hazardous chemicals in the soil.

Thank you for your contribution to Tunza community!

    Best wishes,
    WooJoo
