Thematic Report: Environmental Movies |

I have always been fond of movies. Thousands of movies are made across the world with different issues in different genera from action, comedy, romance to family drama. With many environmental issues being raised across the world, movies related to environmental issues are also made. I often suggest those movies to my friends, family, juniors as they motivate people towards environmental protection. Some of my favorite environmental movies: 1. Avatar Avatar is a 2009 American epic science fiction film directed by James Cameron. One of the highest grossing movie of all time deals with the issues of deforestation and mining. Avatar is a tale of Indigenous resistance to environmental destruction. In the film, Earth moves outward to distant planets in order to satisfy its resource hunger. In their search, Earthlings arrive on Pandora, a biologically rich planet with a diverse and complex ecosystem. In defense of their home planet, the Indigenous people of Pandora (the Na'vi) engage in combat with the earthlings over which aspect of the planet is more important: the life above or the resources below. The environmental message in Avatar is one which promotes balance and harmony between humans and nature. However, this balance is represented by the film¡¯s essentialized Indigenous population. Thus, as a foil for Earth's technology-dependent resource-intensive society, the Na'vi are represented as a stereotypical Indigenous population; they are cast as closer to nature in their role as the "ecological Indian." By using archaic portrayals of Indigenous peoples, the film uses an "Indigenous" voice to propel its environmental message. This article visually analyzes how the film uses, produces, and perpetuates stereotypical representations of Indigenous peoples and how these representations effect and advance the film¡¯s environmental message. 2. Wall E WALL-E is a 2008 computer-animated science fiction film produced by Pixar Animation Studios for Walt Disney Pictures, directed by Andrew Stanton. WALL-E depicts an Earth in squalor, completely covered in trash left behind by its former human inhabitants. Director Andrew Stanton may have denied the movie's environmentalist message at the time, but the film on its own arguably showcased our planet's growing problems with pollution and waste. 3. 2.0 2.0 is a Bollywood movie which is sequel to 2010 movie "Robot" directed by Shankar and acted by RajniKant and Akshya Kumar. This movie deals with how mobile technology has affected the life of birds. It shows the fight between nature and technology. The radiations released by the mobile towers are affecting the life of birth and their reproduction. Bird are so important part of our ecosystem. They feed on the insects and pests which we destroy all the foods of world if not controlled. As ecosystem balances all these by its own food chain but due to the advancement and over use of technology the birds are being heavily affected causing the fight between nature and technology for the survival. 4. The Day After Tomorrow The Day After Tomorrow is a 2004 science fiction disaster film co-written, directed, and produced by Roland Emmerich. The Day After Tomorrow is loosely based on the theory of ¡°abrupt climate change.¡± The plot of the movie is that, as a result of global warming, ocean currents that circulate water around the world shut down, heating up the tropics and cooling the North Atlantic. During my Virtual Eco Workshop on "Connect to Climate", I also recommended few movies which showed the effects of climate change. The movies I recommended during the program are listed below . All this movies conveyed a message about our future might look like due to effects of climate change. ¡¤ INTERSTELLAR ¡¤ CHASING CORAL ¡¤ SNOWPIERCER ¡¤ AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH ¡¤ AN INCONVENIENT SEQUEL: TRUTH TO POWER |

Hello Kushal,
this is your mentor WooJoo.
Thank you for your movie recommendations!
I am surprised that you have watched so many environmental movies.
I've only watched Avatar and Interstellar, so now I've got a lot of movies to watch :)
I think one of the analogies of these movies is that they emphasize the balance between human and nature especially.
They expose human's egoism, ignorance and corruption that destroy their own home.
A discussion of the relationship between the advance of technology and the environment has always been taking place for years.
Maintaining a balance between something is always difficult, but it is true that we should sacrifice some parts of our lives for protecting the Earth if we have to, not the opposite way around.
I would like to say thank you for including our movie recommendation theme in your workshop too.
Keep writing.
Best wishes,
WooJoo
