[THEMATIC REPORT] PROCESSED WASTE FOR ANIMAL FEED Reported by: Amama Ira Amalia Priyono
In Indonesia, to be precise in Central Java Province, which is an area with many food factories that produce waste from the production process every day, you need to think about how to treat the residual production waste so that it is not thrown away carelessly and can benefit the surrounding community. These food factories are usually located in rural areas close to community settlements. Based on the experience of my parents' business, namely raising quail. Apart from bran as the main food, my parents also use the waste from the nuggets and sausage factories located not far from the house as additional nutrition for the quails on our farm. Apart from these goals, this is also a support for the community around the factory who helps the factory in processing its waste. The waste produced is not dirty waste that has been scattered with other waste. This waste is deliberately collected by the factory into a container and separated from other waste from the factory. This waste is usually in the form of chicken skin, chicken innards, chicken feet, or other parts that cannot be used for the production process. The factory usually will contact the farmers if there is food waste that is ready, and the farmers will collect it at the factory. The price set for this waste is also affordable and lower than bran as the main food ingredient for livestock. This creates a mutually beneficial symbiosis between the farmer and the factory. Because breeders can benefit from proper factory waste for animal feed, and the factory is helped with waste management. Although this activity does not appear to have a major impact on the environment, if most breeders and factories work together well, this will create a clean environment and a preserved ecosystem. Avoided from factory waste, and the productivity of the livestock sector from these areas also increases. |

Hello Amama!
It's your SJ mentor.
I hope you doing well.
Thank you for letting us know about recycling food waste in Indonesia.
In Korea, there has also been a startup that uses leftover from beer factories as animal feed.
We called this as Upcycling.
As mentioned in the article, communities and factories could collaborate to achieve sustainable development by utilizing waste as new materials rather than waste.
Keep up with your hard work!
Regards,
SJ mentor.

Hello Amama,
this is your mentor WooJoo.
Warm greetings from South Korea.
Thank you for sharing such an interesting report.
It sounds great to upcycle the residual wastes for the animal feed.
Many of the industries are using wastes to convert them into animal feed, fertizilizer, composts etc.
I believe that by these processes we can reduce the trash incimeration and protect our nearby ecosystem.
Thank you once again for sharing your experiences with us.
Regards,
WooJoo
