Free Report: Community and Contract Forest in Nepal

by Bal krishna Pandey | 12-12-2020 02:06 recommendations 0

Forests are important in terms of grass, firewood, timber, agricultural produce, etc. It is also linked to environmental balance. In Nepal, an agricultural country, agriculture is equally important. Nepal currently has 44.74 % forest area.

Community forest is a fundamental invention and identity of Nepal. It was started by inventing community forest system from Nepal to reduce the natural calamities to prevent deforestation of Nepal and to manage the easy supply of grass, firewood, timber and forest produce required by the local community. This community forest system has expanded and developed not only in Nepal. The number of community forests in Nepal is more than 20,000. The area of forest covered by community forest is around eighteen lakh hectares.

At present, community forests define that local forests under the control, protection and management of the community can play a major strategic role in the development of Nepal. When the forest is transferred to the community forest, it is easier to solve the local development plan locally. That facility is facilitated by the income received from the community forest. Successful community management in community forests has also reduced the incidence of fires and evictions in community forests. Community forests have made life easier for the poor.It has taught to plant trees on bare slopes, which has helped in collecting grass, firewood, water, herbs as well as conserving wildlife. Therefore, the forest should be protected in order to provide adequate service to the community by considering the necessary materials in a systematic manner. Users can earn cash by selling herbs and wood from community forests. The cash thus received can be used or spent on drinking water schemes, provision of easy loans to tribals, public works, construction of roads, schools and its management. Its sustainable development creates employment opportunities for future generations. Today, the main basis for the sustainable development of the community is the community forest. It seems that the local consumers should be aware of its protection and promotion and work for the sustainable development of the community.

Kabuliyati (Contract) forest is a forest that is leased to start industry and business related to forest production with public, private and community investment. Such forests can only be rented to carry out government-mandated works. Such activities include natural resource management, productivity growth, and job creation.

The Government of Nepal may designate any part of the National Forest as a Kabuliyati Forest for these purposes:

*    To produce raw materials required by forest based industries,

*    To increase the production of forest produce by planting trees, to distribute, to use,

*    To run tourism business for the protection and development of forests,

*    To conduct agro-forestry activities for the protection and development of forests,

*    To operate farms of insects, leaves and wild animals for the protection and development of forests.
